  • Have you tried/looked into Joplin yet? If I understand right, I think the one box it doesn't tick unfortunately is the first (at least in the Android app), as it supports markdown which is only rendered after leaving edit mode.

However, it does have checkboxes and the whole note doesn't have to be a checklist. You can write a description, add your checklist, add a horizontal separator line, another description, another checklist, all in the same note. It's also FOSS and actively updated. Bonus as well is that it can be used with Syncthing to sync notes to your other devices, and there's a desktop version which has some more flexibility over the Android app.

  • Plus Taylor Swift who has been immensely popular for like...What, over a decade now? Only now suddenly wielding her influence to run the government or something? Please, she's rich, popular, and in business, she basically operates as her own independent nation without needing to run anyone else's. 😂

  • Our understanding of the laws of physics already accounts for situations with uncaused events, in fact. Radioactive decay is an example; an unstable atomic nucleus sitting alone in space with no outside interactions will sometimes spontaneously decay with no preceding “cause”. Virtual particles are another - subatomic particles can spontaneously pop into existence and then pop back out again without a specific event causing it.

With the first example, is that a case of ambiguous causation vs. uncaused? In other words, there may be a cause that isn't yet known? In the latter case, have these been observed, or is this a case of what is supposed to fit/support the model? Not to say it doesn't happen, but that like the former, it's a sufficient explanation given other observations/data in the absence of more information?

That said, I think for some(many?) your description/conception of rationality may be more applicable, but in the terms as I've laid them out, I would call that flexibility a case of rationalizing to accommodate a potentially more unwieldy reality. However, that's to be expected I think, as it seems to be another adaptation in human consciousness to try to navigate being conscious.

  • They're not also locked into Facebook? It seems like far too many public services communicate through these non-public platforms (i.e. often more easily viewed or sometimes only viewable with an account).

  • Thanks, but to clarify when asking specifically for adults, I don't mean involving alcohol (or despite an earlier reply's suggestion, sex).

  • Outside of the tech differences, given that it's for socializing and has fewer people you want to follow, what else keeps you using it? Are there some people/communities (besides aforementioned cryptobros) only on there that you've found of interest?

  • Yeah, it may not be the larger scale but it strikes at the basic idea I was thinking of, so thanks!

  • Hadn't heard of the first two, thanks!

  • If a bunch of them have coordinated a themed red light district, I guess that may count for the most explicit approach to this idea, but I don't know of any that have, albeit maybe parts of Vegas have given that a run for its money.

  • Honestly any, even if I may never get a chance to visit, I like learning about some of them, particularly ride designs and engineering. (Also for those lurking, this question is mainly inspired by having watched some more Defunctland videos lately.)

  • I open it in my browser and leave the tab open forever (because I will never come back to it).

I do this too, to a degree, but have you tried bookmarking in your browser more? I have and it's been pretty nice for maintaining this habit without having a tab perpetually open (I write as I have like 10+ tabs perpetually open that I swear I'll get back to eventually).

  • religion is harm

  • Is the small box to the bottom left of the boulder like its food/water box?

  • What would one recommend as more of a custom build version of these with a way to connect a convenient remote (smartphone or otherwise)? Alternatively is there a way to sort of jailbreak many of them, or does that just become more cumbersome?

  • Any chance you have any experience with FreshRSS's web scraping ability for sites without RSS feeds? I've been dabbling with RSSBridge lately, but it seems like having this altogether might be a decent idea if I'm going to be mucking around with server-software stuff.

  • Have you checked out the following few communities?

!communitypromo@lemmy.ca for new communities to promote themselves as they try to get off the ground.

!newcommunities@lemmy.world for more or less the same, just via Lemmy World.

Also an underrated community that I like to use occasionally:

!lemmy411@lemmy.ca to ask about whether specific communities exist/are around that you may not be having much luck finding (say, due to unique naming or nobody on your instance has joined it so it doesn't appear in search).

Lastly there's my own little community I threw together awhile ago that I'm not sure how to grow where you can ask around for stuff similar to other stuff you're into:

    !likethismaylike@lemm.ee

  • If there was a grand government conspiracy to keep Trump from power, why didn't they keep him from power the first time? And why has this conspiracy been so ineffective at disappearing or otherwise fast-tracking a baseless trial against him to convict and imprison him? Why hasn't the CIA or FBI simply taken him out, given their historic track record of taking out foreign or domestic politically problematic persons?

What conspiracy could be so ineffective as to permit him to not only rise to power, but to attain it for a time, and to try to reclaim it?

  • As a bonus it will check to see if there are some glaring incompatibilities at the same time.

I'd heard of the site but for some reason I'd forgotten this part. I'll definitely use it for that at a minimum (and maybe for sourcing parts as well depending!), as I have a habit of missing some tiny detail that happens to relate to compatibility.
