  • Very much depends on the modifier, though. Like in Baldur's Gate 3 they do crit fails/successes which is what made me think of this. But say my character is a level 20 wizard with an essentially superhuman mastery of Arcana. So a bonus of +12 to arcana and is presented with a rune that needs to be identified:

Under the crit fail/success system, this genius Archmagus with a knowledge of Arcana in the same ballpark as Mystra herself has a 5% chance of not knowing what the fuck that rune does instead of whatever small percentage rolling a minimum of 13 would get you on that particular skill challenege. If this dude rolled the lowest he can roll, it is and should still be treated as pretty damn good.

And it's ultimately up to the DM, of course, but RAW matters too

  • For easier mental C -> F conversion, take (2C)-(2C/10)+32 where C = temp in c.

    16c × 2 = 32

    32/10 = 3.2

    32 - 3.2 = 28.8

    28.8+32 = 60.8, which is exactly correct.

Or if you just want a rough estimate for weather, 2C+(22 to 32) gets you close enough with easier mental math

    16x2+30 = 62, just 1 degree off.

37x2+30 = 104 is like 6 degrees off, though. The further from zero you are, the smaller the number you should add.

  • In the dim lighting, the potroast, burnt, appeared to be an "urban", African American Male, young twenties, medium build and height. The gravy boat, a Glock 19 held sideways in a "gangster" style. All on my kitchen table. In my own home. I acted decisively, as any trained officer of the law would. I attempted to eliminate the potroast. There were unfortunate civilian casualties; but, in my judgment, swift action was necessary to uphold the law.

  • The tech company I work for had been pushing hard for employees to work remotely at least 3 days per week for the last six years or so because of the obvious cost savings, ability to hire people where the cost of labor is lower, and because it was a benefit for employees that cost the company less than nothing.

They changed their tune along with all of these larger tech firms, presumably due to the commercial real estate market and maybe trying to get people to quit without having to pay severance for layoffs. Of course, they're calling it a "return" to work when they had been telling us to work remotely for over half a decade... needless to say, everyone is still pissed 8 months later, and nearly every conversation at the office includes at least one complaint about the policy. If Muskyboye ran our company, he'd have to fire a whooole lot of us.

  • No they didn't. See sources in replies. Hamas' attack at the music festival was awful, bar none. But that doesn't mean you should blindly believe IDF war propaganda being used to further oppress and disenfranchise the Palestinian people.

There's literally a genocide going on against them. They live in an apartheid state where they have essentially no rights. Hamas doing bad stuff does not mean that state funded genocide campaigns against Palestinians are OK. The propaganda is meant to legitimize the violence against civilians.

  • Rakuten Kobo is a good alternative to Amazon Kindle. I can just drag and drop books, no internet connectivity necessary, no DRM... I have no problems with it at all. Would be cool to be able to load custom firmware, but I do not need to since it already doesn't spy on me and doesn't force DRM (3rd party book imports).

  • The Palestinian people, as a whole, certainly have the moral high ground given the Israeli government's decades long campaign of genocide and apartheid against them.

However, if you mean "actors on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have done reprehensible things," then of course that is the case. Hamas and the Israeli military have both committed great and serious crimes against civilians.

But only one side has the power to begin negotiations or seriously affect genocide against the other, and that's Israel - and thus far, they have decided on the genocide route. Supporting the Palestinian people in this conflict is not the same as endorsing Hamas' actions.

  • As a 10+ year reddit user who has switched 98% to Lemmy, only checking reddit on my computer every couple days: Lemmy is completely fine, and I have seamlessly transitioned from Reddit.

Its userbase is more technical than Reddit's, and there's not as much content. But it is a perfectly good Reddit alternative. I find it isn't as addictive as reddit, which is awesome. I just wish there were more educational communities akin to AskHistorians, AskScience, etc.
