  • Yes. Europeans tend to think Americans get the government we vote for and that we must like Trump since he was the president and isn't going away. It's ignorant, but I understand that they have this notion and I will, out of compassion and tolerance, explain that I am not a deranged bootlicking reactionary and do not support forever war, Christian nationalism or corporate hegemony.

  • State and federal charges aren't the same thing. He can be charged at the federal level for federal crimes and at the state level for state crimes.

He is simultaneously trying to get the charges dismissed and if that's not successful then get them moved to a federal court.

Since he broke laws at both the state and federal level, but he is only been charged at the state level, The federal indictment would need to happen before it would even be possible to change the venue or argue jurisdictional conflicts.

  • These kind of rebranding moves serve a specific purpose. They announced to the marketing universe a change of name and in turn the marketing universe adopts this new name thus pushing out the old name from relevance in search results or news articles.

This serves the goals of the marketing universe by being fresh and marketable, and serves the needs of the business by allowing them to shed their reputation like a cast-off skin.

The general public loses out because information is now fractured and the continuity is broken.

  • Most doctors aren't paid enough either, and the supply of doctors is kept low to keep the price of care high, the cost of becoming a doctor is inflated by, among other things, the amount of residency programs available is limited making them very expensive to get into.

The whole thing is engineered to extract wealth, not functionally deliver a supply of goods and services to those who do work.

  • I'm on my phone so it's tricky too properly cite these sources but some back of the napkin math:

Global annual CO2 production is about 37 billion metric tons. About 27% of that by weight is just carbon. That's like 10 billion metric tons in just the carbon part of what is being put into the atmosphere each year by people.

The global annual production of cement, one of the most used construction materials in human history, is estimated to be about 4 billion metric tons.

If you had a magic machine that could pull carbon out of the air, remove the oxygen from it, store it in a pure form, you would have to now find some place to store two and a half times the mass of all the cement the world produces each year.

That would be just a break even on carbon. The energy costs for any kind of real life machine or infrastructure to do that would necessarily be extraordinary.

If this device was powered by magically consuming thermal energy from the area around it, the heat demands would change the climate faster than the carbon being pulled out of the air.

My point is, we make just produce too much carbon. Way way way too much.

  • The articles you link not only don't make your case, but seem to oppose it.

The Congressional shooter was protesting taxes and fired at his local congressman.

Your other link details a bunch of cops responding with deadly force to protesters.

Which part of this is supposed to show that liberals are violent or approve of violence? Not a huge fan of liberals myself, but they aren't out there conspiring to kidnap governors or making pipe bombs to threaten Congress. Liberals aren't stockpiling guns and sending threatening letters and manifestos to politicians.

Right wing nationalists are doing those things and they are getting off too lightly if they are even punished at all so the problem is getting worse, not better.

  • They would be under surveillance if they were protesting oil or trying to form a union.

Instead they are just being allowed to use fear and intimidation to undermine the freedoms some immigrants will experience in America. Strange that law enforcement seems to be ignoring the rival gang in its entirety.

  • Does this mean that every person that's ever opposed Trump or found unfavorably against him is going to have everything in their career examined through the lens of Donald Trump being persecuted by them?

It's not good What this judge did to deny someone their public trial and failing to swear in the jury is just stupid. I don't see how it relates to Trump or even indirectly is affected by him.

  • Crossing RimWorld with Star Trek is just RimWorld with mods.

OTOH crossing GATE with RimWorld sounds like awesome, different and somehow incompatible mods.

  • My guess is, the reason why politics are not an outsized portion of your life over there has something to do with your country not having an angry, empowered, and vocal minority disproportionately overrepresented in government making regressive laws to strip away human rights and sell off ever more of your life to rent seeking corporations.

It's everyday with these people here. If they got everything they wanted today they would come up with a new list of horrible shit to demand tomorrow. We are a police state and a third of us seem to think the boot isn't stepping on us hard enough.

  • Indie films can offer different contracts than big studios.

Honestly this is the best way forward. The big studios will never cave into the demands of labor because they are ghouls and they have unlimited money to wait out the strike.

If smaller studios keep making movies because they respect the labor by offering fair terms, then that is the stuff winning is made of. The big studios, 100% of them, need to be broken up.

  • 1 pound telekinesis in my line of sight. You won't be opening any safes or stealing anyone's gun, but you can do plenty of incredible stuff with even the weakest supernatural power.

I think I would be robbing casinos and thumbing the scale all over the place. It doesn't take much to make marginal opportunities into steady gains if you can cheat physics and break probability.

  • Banned from /r/politics back when plain clothes officers in unmarked cars were snatching people off the streets during the police reform protests for wondering, "What happens if one of these people defends themselves against kidnappers with their second amendment?". The reason cited, was that I was advocating violence.

Honestly I thought that was pretty mild, and not really an advocation of violence so much as wondering what happened if the left responded the way the right does... I got my answer I think.

  • Don't dream it, be it.

  • If I don't have to pay many of my own expenses, much of my business is a protected monopoly, and the government is providing me facilities at a negative interest rate, I am pretty sure I would be making pretty incredible money.

  • Sports associations are not real businesses. Not a single one of them has to pay their own bills, so all of their accounting is farcical. The NBA, NFL, NHL, and most any other sports organization gets a tremendous amount of subsidy from local governments, a special tax status, and Monopoly protections.

None of these things would be nearly as profitable if they had to buy their own stadiums, pay their own salaries, and pay everyone in the organization properly. National sports leagues are a racket. If the WNBA only loses 30 million a year, that seems like a drop in the bucket compared to what these other ones are costing us with their taxpayer funded multibillion dollar stadiums that some prison company or student loan shark gets to put their name on.
