  • Even when they were an RC car store they still had that one area in the back that none of the salespeople knew about. It didnt actually get removed until it turned into a phone store

  • If you did have a car, where would you go for electronics? There’s not many places left I wouldn’t avoid.

I’m near enough to MicroCenter and You-Do-It, but most people aren’t and there’s really not much else worth going to.

Online is king for electronics shopping

  • That article has a pretty extreme example: guy on 21 acres atop a steep ridge who doesn’t have phone service or running water or probably any infrastructure. There’s going to be people you can’t reach with fiber and this may be one of them. We can argue about that when the other 99% has fast internet service

  • Can’t “Make Coal Great Again” unless you force there to be customers. Why doesn’t everyone consider the profit margins of coal oligarchs in West Virginia? At least have pity for the automated equipment that would be out of jobs

  • All posturing and bullying aside ….

Building a nuclear weapon is “easy” and the knowledge is generally available. However enriching uranium is much tougher. For many decades the most effective way to limit nuclear weapon proliferation has been to restrict enrichment efforts.

I hope you’re not questioning why it’s a good idea to limit how many countries have nuclear weapons. Sure, the ones that have them are due for plenty of criticism but you can’t escape the math of more countries with nuclear weapons means more chances of someone using one.

As a citizen of the only country to use a nuke in anger …. I’m fine with everyone else calling that out assuming they’re serious about preventing it from ever happening again

  • Sure, new data centers are a necessary evil that have to be built somewhere, but …..

What’s in it for the town?

    • are they claiming jobs? Like 12?
    • are they claiming a new water system for everyone? At whose cost?
    • will this benefit the community in some way?
    • is there excess power that needs to be used?

Sure they should be somewhere but how about somewhere with the infrastructure to support it? Somewhere already developed?

  • Yet again it’s Congress that has to act, Congress that is giving up their authority without a fight. This policy does not affect pretty much any of us. If only there were Congress people demanding transparency, accountability, human rights, it would affect them. They’re not only the ones affected, they’re the ones who can say “LoL, no”

US Congress people are among the most powerful elected officials in the effing world, or they were. I don’t know why they prefer to settle for just going along, while bickering endlessly while favoring their corporate masters. wtf, stand up like you always claim. And no, standing up against a high school athlete is not a substitute for standing up for your constituents, your society, your own goddam list for power which somehow doesn’t matter anymore

  • It is though. It’s not like they’re brave undercover heroes going into cartel territory, trying to protect their families from retaliation. These are in general population hiding their faces because they know what they’re doing is illegal, unethical, and would be shamed by pretty much everyone. They’re are trying to escape charges. They are criminals

  • They’re not ruining their economy by fighting what makes them great or their people healthy. They have their grift and corruption more under control. They’re not cutting back on investments for their future in favor of investments for their past. They have the attention span to commit to a plan for more than four years at a time.

  • Yeah that’s my main culinary goal for this year. Eat beans. And lentils. Cook them. Bulk them. Spice them. Try different styles. They’ve never really been a significant part of my diet and I want to change that.

A big part of that goal is to have better choices when I’m not motivated to cook. Many bean/lentil dishes seem well suited for bulk prep and make good leftovers. I just need to get started.

  • I like their idea of a “polluter pays” or climate superfund” bill, but do those work?

    • We do have some form of “polluter pays” laws now but unless it’s enough to actually clean up, then it’s not effective. Also if it “gives them permission” to pollute since they already paid, are we potentially making things worse?
    • superfund idea is a good one - taxes not meant to be punitive or guide behavior but just to face the reality that that industry has an impact they need to be held responsible for

I didn’t see a link to any such proposed bill but I’m confident in saying the problem is it’s not enough, not comprehensive enough

  • Won’t that just cut off its head and leave the parts behind? I thought that was the general problem with using tweezers.

Luckily we don’t generally get ticks but the last time I tried to remove one I completely screwed it up, so I always take my kids to urgent care to have it done. It wouldn’t take much for that to become ruinously expensive

  • That’s what I’m hoping. After many years of not going to a gym and not using crappy home equipment, will I use nicer equipment more conveniently at home? I can hope so and at least you only buy it once

  • When I was a kid, we got a cheap barbell set and used it regularly. As a parent, I’m horrified they were allowed to sell cheap rickety dangerous equipment and would insist on heavier duty with more safety.

A squat rack is a great example. You don’t need it and I never used one as a kid, but it will save you from accidents getting the bar onto your shoulders and back down when you’re exhausted. I would not allow my kid to do squats without one

  • If you’re motivated at home you can run on street/walk/trails, you can do core body workouts, you can get some cheap equipment that will get you most of the benefits of a gym at much less cost. You can always find cheap used equipment for sale from people cleaning out their houses

Going to the gym gets you better equipment, more equipment, and helps establish a routine to keep you going when motivation isn’t enough.

If you get home equipment similar to what you’d use at a gym, the payback time is much longer, it may be difficult to move or store, and you can’t get rid of it when it’s time.

At home I have a good set of dumbbells, an Exercycle, and exercise mats I never use. However I’ve never really been able to establish a gym routine so that’s a waste of money. My brother has a good half ton of exercise equipment he’d give me free of charge but I have no way to transport it and it would cost too much.

I actually am considering getting more home exercise equipment. At least my teens would use it and maybe I would too. It’s expensive but it’s not continuous cost like a gym would be.
