    • Innocent Iranians will get killed by more bombs.
    • Innocent Americans will get killed by terrorist attacks.
    • Innocent shipping crews will get killed by increased attempts to close down regional traffic
    • I’d been go so far as to say innocent Israelis will get killed as local terrorism and assasinations ramp up, and yet more innocent lives lost as Israel overreacts even more strongly
    • many innocent lives will be lost if Russia decides to supply Iran with nuclear material
  • Thanks for the attempt, but all I see are “the 17 sustainable development goals” where the Trump administration wants to take us backwards

Hopefully I’m just being us-centric and I understand our current issues may be partly obscured by long term trends and global statistics. However we also have an outsized effect on the world and those are some of the first places cut or corrupted, changed from achievements to points of instigation

  • Sometimes you can be a little self-centered. While climate change is overwhelming, a huge catastrophe for society and humanity’s future, how much will it directly affect you? Most of us will really only see more of the same: more severe and unstable weather, modified seasons, times where food and power are more expensive. You can handle that.

Sometimes it’s ok not to think too much about the statistics telling the bigger story or the news detailing the more extreme effects. As long as you know they exist

What can you do about the things that directly affect you? What can you do about the things in your control?

  • Right, and this is just one of those times where the scab was itchy so we scratched it off. We re-opened the gouge and are bleeding again. The question is whether the healing is still happening, with a little backtracking, or whether we’re exposing ourselves to gangrene

  • I suppose I don’t have any evidence, but think about it a little …

    1. Do you really think doctors have the extra time to dedicate an afternoon to doing paperwork? What about your experience with medical offices led you to expect all this free time?
    2. Do you really think doctors are deciding a contentious legal issue on their own? Do you understand why hospitals and other corporations even have a legal department?
  • Ok But even then ….. I live in a state that elected to follow CARB rules and everyone I know realizes EVs are inevitable and wishes we’d transition faster. Im probably in an echo chamber like everyone else, but the states that were moving most aggressively were also the states that predominantly want to move aggressively….. and vote blue.

It could be one reason we were only 61% blue instead of 65% as in 2020, but there’s really no significant reactionary politics here

My brothers live in purple states, following EPA standards, and resistance to EVs is pretty solid. Why do they care if they’re not even following the more aggressive standards? If they think it’s heavy handed or wastes money, feel free to laugh at “owning the libs” and vote in what you think is your best interest. That’s what I don’t get: not only how it turned political but how are people so strongly against something that doesn’t affect them?

  • Or if you look at it from a jobs perspective, a lot of those jobs are still in the US (until you shut them down): do you really want to not only not have those jobs but also not have that industry?

Or if you look at it as a gadget for the well off …. You could decide to just not spend your own money there

  • At my local commuter rail station the entrance to the parking lot is immediately next to the track. It’s easily within margin of error for GPS and if you’re only focusing immediately in front of you the pavement at the entrance probably look similar.

There are plenty of cues so don’t rolled shouldn’t be fooled but perhaps FSD wouldn’t pay attention to them since it’s a bit of an outlier.

That being said, I almost got my Subaru stuck once because an ATV trail looked like the dirt road to a campsite from the GPS, and I missed any cues there may have been

  • I mean …… Tesla self driving allegedly did this three times in three years but we don’t yet have public data to verify that’s what happened nor do we in any way compare it to what human drivers do.

Although one of the many ways I think I’m an above average driver (just like everyone else) is that people do a lot of stupid things at railroad crossings and I never would

  • Pretty big for some of us. My brother has been talking about buying a minivan to build into an RV and I’ve been wondering about sleeping in my EV with HVAC, and towing a utility trailer with supplies to build out an RV site with all the comforts of home

  • Also investigate what the apps do with your data…. Make sure they take good care of it.

That’s certainly the biggest reason I never succeeded with online dating. I’ve never been able to get past creating a profile, with all the personal data you’d have to give, and no way to trust any of them with it.

Maybe I’m biased, I knew someone a couple decades ago planning to build an online dating app and he spent most of his time figuring out how to monetize the data

  • At the same time, we allow bigger wood framed buildings than most places, so maybe there’s good reason.

—- anecdote time: a few years ago my town started allowing wood framed buildings up to 6 floors, from the previous 5. Sure enough, the first one burned down (it wasn’t finished so no one was yet living there to get hurt). Of course it was defended by people claiming technology fixes that - if the smoke alarms were installed, people would have had time to get out. We’re already making a huge concession in people’s lives so the builder can profit more, and now you also want to make it harder to escape?
