  • I'm simply sharing my own experience. It's not a "shot in the dark"

There would likely be fewer signal users because a lot of normies only installed signal because one or two of their friends convinced them to. Once they figure out that interOp exists, why would they keep using signal (where only 2 or 3 of their paranoid weirdo friends hang out) when they could just use whatsapp to talk with their signal friends?

Ive had multiple people tell me that they only keep signal around because of me.... While i'm flattered, it doesnt bode well for signal.

  • People trying Signal because it's compatible with WhatsApp that everybody uses would lead to more Signal-to-Signal chats, and that's a good thing.

75% of my signal contacts would delete signal and just use whatsapp if interOp happened... I've already slowly lost 1 or 2 contacts a year because i'm the only one they know on signal and they either gave up or forgot to reinstall when they got a new phone

  • if you are on debian stable, there would not be updates to 300 packages (unless there were 300 packages with some security issue that needed a fix)

if you then decide to upgrade to the next version of debian, THEN you would have hundreds of packages to update

  • Cue my friends moaning about how the gov't wont give them thousands of dollars of free money to buy a tesla

Meanwhile, where's my free money for never contributing to gridlock, never causing potholes, never polluting the environment, etc.?

  • Private entities have the right to decide what is or is not acceptable content on their platforms

Exactly. Not sure why people have this expectation that facebook is some kind of serious platform that should be held to some high journalistic standard

It was a website for rating girls. It's always been a joke website. People should be free to post whatever offensive and non-factual nonsense they want there (and its related subsidiaries)

If your entire life is so deeply entwined with facebook that you cant leave, and you demand that they only allow nice content, that's a YOU problem.

This is not a defense of facebook. This is me saying facebook is shit, it's ALWAYS been shit. Just walk away

  • so this article briefly mentions an interesting point in the second paragraph but doesn't follow up on it:

These difficulties are not unique to Canada. The English-speaking world is rife with examples of hugely expensive and delayed transit projects

    https://urbanists.social/@straphanger/113617757559814333

it's because we don't look outside of the anglosphere for inspiration and examples... and the anglosphere is nortoriously bad at building transit

"Every country with a transit project over $1 billion per kilometre speaks English as its primary language," they report. The US, HK, Australia, UK also spend too much—because they fail to look at projects in the rest of the world, comparing only within the Anglosphere.

edit: actually, both the globe article and the mastodon thread link to the same report that discusses the problem in the anglosphere: https://archive.is/o/fX30B/https://stateofcitiessummit.ca/files/041224_Understanding-the-Drivers-of-Transit-Construction-Costs-in-Canada-A-Comparative-Study.pdf
