Data normalization has nothing to do with it.

All Matrix channels are a channel name and a domain. That’s a unique identifier. You need unique identifiers. Matrix is not designed to exist in an vacuum (even if you can make it work that way). Locality is dictated by policy not by the data model.

That’s correct but it’s not like “reddit disallowing NSFW” because you can still access the content.

Hell, some Lemmy apps allow you to be logged into multiple accounts at once so you can just make an account on the instance that hosts the content your main instance blocks and see both of them.

Why not just run your own instance of the Lemmy software? This is essentially what you are asking to do.

Then you should understand why a server needs to exist to accept a post from you.

Unless you are saying “why can’t I send the API calls to Lemmy instances that cause a post from another domain to show up in one” and the answer is that posts aren’t pushed to other instances, they are pulled.

So you’d need to set up a listener that responds to requests for subscriptions and requests for post and comment updates and responds in kind when another instance that you wish to allow federation with) asks for updates and congratulations you’ve just re-invented the Lemmy server software.

Now, what might be a better idea is a cross post functionality where the crosspost has a single identifier of its own so it only will show up once in your feed (I guess as your local instance)

That way you can have the ability to reach everyone as if you had posted a bunch of times, but a big popular corporate instance can’t gather up all the communities and then defederate and wall them off.
