  • I wish there was a license for content like the GPL, that states if you use this content to train generative AI, the model must be open source. Not sure that would legally be enforceable though (due to fair-use).

  • OpenAI is no longer "pure." They are not open. They do not publish the details of any of the discoveries they've made (which used to be standard practice, even in the private sector). Their leadership is now in the "effective accelerationism" camp that worships capitalism, and sees developing AGI as their moral obligation, regardless of what harm it may cause to society. (They are also delusional, because it's very unlikely AGI will be developed anytime soon).

  • I don't think there will be real elections anymore if a Republican wins the next presidential election, so it makes no sense to me to punish the Dem party by locking them out of control of the federal government forever. Furthermore, Trump and Reps are hinting at committing more genocide-like actions on U.S. soil ("rounding up" all the undocumented immigrants, eradicating trans people from public life, etc).

  • Due to electing Trump in 2016, we have the majority of U.S. states where women no longer have body autonomy, tons of anti-lbgt laws, and a Supreme Court that continues to weaken voting and civil rights. The Republicans publicly have a plan to install a "deep state" the next time they get a Republican in the presidency (project 2025). It's quite possible the U.S. will never have "fair" elections after another Republican presidency. Trump and friends have learned from their previous coup attempt, and will try a different method next time.

  • Wages are usually much lower in rural areas (if there are even jobs available), so this still applies. And, as others have said, there's plenty of pollution caused by farms and factories in rural areas. I grew up in a rural area, and still remember the seasonal smell of cow manure, and the river that was so polluted you could only eat 1 fish per month from it. I also got a check from a class action lawsuit because a waste disposal facility caught on fire and spewed toxic smoke all over a 50 mile radius. And a local factory got caught just dumping toxic waste in the ground.

  • Is MAD not well-known or taught anymore? A lot of the comments here seem to be ignoring the fact that Russia or NATO would launch a full-scale retaliation before the first-strike even made it to its destination. It would likely result in the world human population going from 8 billion to 2 billion.

  • I really only know lower-middle-class (family) and and upper-middle-class people (professional acquaintances). The lower-middle-class people I know do seem to be doing better since pre-covid (some had their unions negotiate decent wage increases, some got promotions into superivisory roles, some switched jobs with a big pay bump). The upper-middle-class people I know are doing much better, until maybe recently (some have been laid-off, but they may still come back on top).

I do not currently know anybody with 2 jobs. I know people who work lots of overtime to increase their income though. I'm not saying the poor and lower-middle-class shouldn't be making more money, I'm just saying they're doing a bit better, on average. Real wages have not been stagnating or declining like they have in many long periods in the past.

  • Marx once thought that capitalism was needed for industrialization before transitioning to the next stage of human development (socialism), but I think he changed his opinion later.

I personally think there would be much more innovation in a more socialist society with UBI or UBS (universal basic services) because people should generally have more time to get educated and work on risky ideas instead of working on assembly lines for 60+ hours/week just to take care of their families.

  • Nah, they're not meming. They hate what they think the U.S. has become/is becoming under (small d) democratic rule. They know that in a fair democracy, the Republican party would lose all federal power in a decade or so. So, they want to destroy democracy, and try to roll things back.

  • I've heard food prices are up because of the Russian war raising the price of fertilizer (depends heavily on natural gas) and animal feed (Ukraine was one of the world's largest suppliers). McDonald's profits are up 17% year-over-year though, so they're definitely raising prices faster than their costs are increasing.

  • Are you sure you can't replicate them? They're just English muffins with some kind of fake liquid butter squirted on the inside (then toasted), frozen sausage patties, and eggs fried in metal egg rings. I think their English muffins may have a little more salt on the outside than the ones you typically get from the store. I guess it may be hard to cook the eggs exactly the same, since they use a grill that heats the top and bottom at the same time (same with the sausage, but those can easily be flipped).

  • A lot of people are time-poor (have kids, long work hours, multiple jobs, etc). McDonald's used to be pretty competitive-priced compared to cooking from home. I remember when their cheeseburgers were something like $0.70, and I often would get 4 of them on my break (I was in highschool, and worked 6 hour days after school, so I obviously didn't have time to cook).

  • not at all

  • Yeah, plenty of women are shit people and abusers as well. Sucks that it isn't typically taken seriously by society.

(I'm not one of those men's-rights people. The reason abused men aren't taken seriously is because of harmful gender expectations and toxic-masculinity).

  • Thanks :) I've always been extremely pro-decentralization (that does not use blockchains to "solve" byzantine fault tolerance and sybil vulnerabilities). I'm fine with things being somewhat less efficient if they're decentralized, and fine with creators and fans eating the costs about things they're passionate about (though it would probably turn semi-decentralized with companies offering seeding/content-delivery services at low cost). The rise of symmetric home fiber connections further increases viability. But, I agree that it likely will never become mainstream.
