Right?! I get the whole fuck Elon circle jerk. Dudes an idiot. But with that being said, I am still fascinated by starlink, spaceX, neuralink and Tesla. I dont have a lick of social media beyond this lemmy account (and obviously my definatelynotporn@lemmynsfw.com account or whatever the user tag is), I also do not have cable to be exposed to cable news or main stream media takes. So my fascination is entirely driven by these types of articles that make a mention of musk but the focus is on the advancements being made and while Elon will be in history books for each of these leaps in technology, I still remain fascinated because the advancements are being made by very qualified, very intelligent individuals. As well as the impact these projects have on our everyday life.
Super duper duper not a religious person but one of my favorite pieces of literature is the serenity prayer. You cut out the last like 6 lines and it doesn't even mention shit about God but the rest perfectly outlines my approach to politics, everyday idiots, and not kicking little kids in the chest when they act like shitbags. (Discussion for another time but as of this comment I am batting 1000 for correcting child misbehaviors via swift kick to the chest vs kids who were given timeout after misbehaving lol /s)
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Its a horrible truth but life has not, is not and never will be fair. You will be beat down, fucked over, robbed, disrespected and overwhelmingly discouraged by what life throws at you. Life is a battle and victory is having the strength to continue fighting. When life is at its darkest, that is when you must be at your best.
If all you are looking to do is free up ssd space, just add another ssd or hdd. It will save you money by not having to pay a cloud subscription fee depending on how much you are trying to store. A decent ssd for speed and storage will cost you prolly $150-$250. For a cloud service you'll prolly be looking at $50/year per 1tb of storage. The catch is tho, you stop paying... you loose everything you had on the cloud that wasn't backed up to a physical device. You're guna want your shit backed up as a safety measure anyways because you can't control much of anything if all your pc data is on some company's cloud server. They increase prices, tough shit. They have security breaches, tough shit.
I'm sure a bunch of lemmy users can chime in with self hosting cloud options for secure cloud storage or something along the lines but I'm answering with an understanding that you might not be ready to dive that deep into something like that.
Cloud storage is good if you are in school, travel alot, work on office on somedays while working from home others, or for sharing data between multiple parties.
If everything you do is going to be on your own local pc, then fuck the cloud.
Oh yeah one last thing, if you delete a file on the cloud, there is no recovery wizard, that ahits gone doggy. I can thank Dropbox for that harsh lesson.
Not sure if you are being sincere or sarcastic but you hit the nail on the head either way. It's predominantly for paralyzed and disabled people to be able to have mobility. It was a short article but it did cover the two studies:
"The Prime Study, designed for an estimated five patients, allows paralyzed patients to control external devices such as computers or smartphones with their minds. A second study, Convoy, is designed for three patients, and allows them to control devices such as assistive robotic arms."
I mean you could just read an article if you're guna ask questions like that lol. They have 2 studies open with the FDA:
"The Prime Study, designed for an estimated five patients, allows paralyzed patients to control external devices such as computers or smartphones with their minds. A second study, Convoy, is designed for three patients, and allows them to control devices such as assistive robotic arms."
The US doesn't own the Panama canal? I thought that was the whole shit behind speak softly but carry a big stick thing? Guess I need to do some wikipedia-ing.
Flip it however you wanna flip it . 500,000 out 85,000,000 seems insanely worse than 770,000 out of 347,000,000 which is the USA homeless numbers according to google. What the fuck happened? The whole country is only the size of a large state lol. How is the largest EU economy so incompetent it produces A homeless rate on a scale of a super power?
Nope. We are in the wheel of a machine driven by corporate interests protected by a government with an unmatchable military complex financed by American tax dollars being paid by a society who follows whatever carrot network media decides to hold infront of our nose. The current state of America's governing powers is assuming the formn.01% has always dreamed of. A world where the poor get poorer while the market and it's investing parties get richer. All governing bodies dream of a constant state of too poor to change but not poor enough to risk life or threaten the controlling body's prosperity. America will remain at this state until people realize the fight isn't against an opposing political belief. The fight is between the American people and the American government. For as long as this political polarity goes on, there will never be a unilaterally directed body sting enough to foce change.
The comment you're being a douche to declares they only can read the title. The title makes two statement of facts formatted to imply that one cause the other. The comment you are being a douche to givers their opinion that correlation does not mean causation. The topic of the title and article is one that is widely discussed in all cultures and regions.
Do you really think being a douche was the appropriate response to this scenario? Did the person make preposterous claims under some false front of reading the article when they actually didn't? You post an article protected behind paywall, then act like a douche when someone comments? They clearly were interested in reading what you took the time to post so explain why your response is so abrassive? I admit I'm way over the top in my reply to you about your response but fuck that was such an annoying way to act.
The issue is the way the stories are done in the super cheesy/corny/wierd style that is anime. Just not something I find entertaining.
Right. I don't like the genre. I don't know any specific titles. It's no different than me not liking lifetime movies. I can't tell you the title of any specific show or movies I just know if it's on, and I'm watching it for whatever reason, I do not enjoy watching it.
I once had to use the NY State government website for info. Finally found the page. Open page up and see a blue background with dark blue font. Un fucking readable.
Oh fuck you, buddy. Lol I find it infuriating the amout of product and software bugs that get ignored and passed to every sequential generation that follows and you wanna pile on fake bugs. You're not my buddy, pal.
We all agree with you!
Anime. I just don't get the appeal.
For fucking reals. Sign me up to get scanned while taking every drug imaginable!!! I would love to see for example why cocaine for me with my adhd has like none of the affects that other people have. My buddy rips a line "IM ON TOP OF THE WPRLD" I rip a line "fuck I should prolly do my taxes"
So by your logic a child locked in a room with no understanding of language is not capable of thought? All of your reasoning for why a computers aren't generating thoughts are actual psychological case studies tought in the abnormal psychology course I took in high school back in 2005. You don't even have to go that far into the abnormal portion of it either. I've never sat with my buddies daughter's "classes" but she is 4 years old now and on the autism spectrum. She is doing wonderfully since she started with this special Ed preschool program she's in but at 4 years old she still cannot speak and she is still in diapers. Not saying this to say she's really bad or far on the spectrum, I'm using this example because it's exactly what you are out lining. She isn't a dumb kid by any means. She's 100x's more athletic and coordinated than any other kid I've seen her age. What he was told and once he told me I noticed it immediately, which was that with autistic babies, they don't have the ability to mimic what other humans around them are doing. I'm talking not even the littlest thing like learning how to smile or laugh by seeing a parent smiling at them. It was so tough on my dude watching him work like it meant life or death trying to get his daughter to wave back when she was a baby cuz it was the first test they told him they would do to try and diagnose why his daughter wasn't developing like other kids.
Fuck my bad I went full tails pin tangent there but what I mean to say is, who are we to determine what defines a generated independent thought when the industry of doctors, educators and philosophers haven't done all that much understanding our own cognizant existence past "I think, Therefore I am.
People like my buddy's daughter could go their entire life as a burden of the state incapable of caring for themself and some will never learn to talk well enough to give any insight to the thoughts being processed behind their curtains. So why is the argument always pointing toward the need for language to prove thought and existence?
Like is said in NY other comment. Not trying to prove or argue any specific point. This shit is just wildly interesting to me. I worked in a low income nursing home for years where they catered to residents who were considered burdens of the state after NY closed the doors on psychological institutions everywhere, which pushed anyone under 45y/o to the streets and anyone over 45 into nursing homes. So there were so many, excuse the crash term but it's what they were, brain dead former drug addics or brain dead alzheimer residents. All of whom spent thw last decades of their life mumbling, incoherent, and staring off into space with noone home. We're they still humans cababl3 of generative intelligence cua every 12 days they'd reach the hand up and scratch their nose?
I'm super stoked now to follow this and to also follow the progress being made mapping the neurological pathways of the human brain. Wanna say i saw an article on lemmy recently where the mapped the entire network of neurons in either an insect or a mouse, I can't remember. So I'm guna assume like 3-5 years until we can map out human brains and know exactly what is firing off which brain cells as someone is doing puzzles in real time.
I think it would be so crazy cool if we get to a pint where the understanding of our cognitive processes is so detailed that scientists are left with nothing but faith as their only way of defining the difference between a computer processing information and a person. Obviously the subsequent dark ages that follow will suck after all people of science snap and revert into becoming idiot priests. But that's a risk I'm willing to take. 🤣🤣🍻
So that doesn't really address the concept I'm questioning. You're leaning hard into the fact the computer is using numbers in place of words but I'm saying why is that any different than assigning native language to a book written in a foreign language? The vernacular, language, formula or code that is being used to formulate a thought shouldn't delineate if something was a legitimate thought.
I think the gap between our reasoning is a perfect example of why I think FUTURE models (wanna be real clear this is entirely hypothetical assumption that LLMs will continue improving.)
What I mean is, you can give 100 people the same problem and come out with 100 different cognitive pathways being used to come to a right or wrong solution.
When I was learning to play the trumpet in middle school and later learned the guitar and drums, I was told I did not play instruments like most musicians. Use that term super fuckin loosely, I am very bad lol but the reason was because I do not have an ear for music, I can't listen and tell you something is in tune or out of tune by hearing a song played, but I could tune the instrument just fine if I have an in tune note played for me to match. My instructor explained that I was someone who read music the way others read but instead of words I read the notes as numbers. Especially when I got older when I learned the guitar. I knew how to read music at that point but to this day I can't learn a new song unless I read the guitar tabs which are literal numbers on a guitar fretboard instead of a actual scale.
I know I'm making huge leaps here and I'm not really trying to prove any point. I just feel strongly that at our most basic core, a human's understanding of their existence is derived from "I think. Therefore I am." Which in itself is nothing more than an electrochemical reaction between neurons that either release something or receive something. We are nothing more than a series of plc commands on a cnc machine. No matter how advanced we are capable of being, we are nothing but a complex series of on and off switches that theoretically could be emulated into operating on an infinate string of commands spelled out by 1's and 0's.
Im sorry, my brother prolly got me way too much weed for Xmas.
Lol missed it skimming 4 short paragraphs?🤣 The Cat in the Hat has more fuckin words than this article so don't be a douche and just say you didn't even open the article.
"It's a good thing having it in the thread, so thanks for doing the work." douchiest comment of the year so far!🥇🏆🏅
