  • Florida Republican Michelle Salzman Calls for 'All' Palestinians to Die in Viral Video

A Florida state representative, identified online as Republican Michelle Salzman, has gone viral on social media for shouting "all of them" after being asked how many dead Palestinians will be enough during a Florida Senate session.

The politician was responding to a speech calling for a ceasefire from the Democrat Rep. Angie Nixon. Newsweek has reached out to Salzman for comment by email.

  • There is an article in the Washington Post about it

The scope of the intrusion, while broad, makes sense, analysts say, given that China wields great leverage over Cambodia, where Western officials say it is building a Chinese naval facility for the exclusive use of its military. The facility would become China’s first such overseas outpost in the Pacific — a significant element of a strategy to build a network of military facilities around the world in support of its aspirations to become a true global power.

"As China and Cambodia continue to deepen their cooperation, it becomes all the more important to China to collect intelligence on Cambodia,” said Joe McReynolds, China Security Studies Fellow at the Jamestown Foundation. “If you’re [Chinese President] Xi Jinping, the last thing you want is to be blindsided by political developments in Cambodia.”

  • Bemoaning Ohio results, Santorum says ‘pure democracies’ aren’t how to run a country

After a particularly disappointing night of election results for Republicans, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) lamented “pure democracies,” where major decisions are left up to voters rather than their elected officials.

“Thank goodness that most of the states in this country don’t allow you to put everything on the ballot, because pure democracies are not the way to run a country,” Santorum said Tuesday night on Newsmax.

  • Boris Johnson asked if £37bn NHS Test and Trace was ‘achieving anything’

The former prime minister made the comment in handwritten notes on a report from the Cabinet Office’s Covid taskforce on 28 October 2020, which were today shown to the Covid inquiry.

Witness Edward Udny-Lister also claimed Johnson did make the infamous comment that he’d rather “let the bodies pile high” than enforce another lockdown. Dominic Cummings first alleged the then-PM had said this in 2021, but Johnson denied it.

  • @Robin.Net

I would agree, but there are people here on Lemmy and elsewhere who don't distinguish between Palestinian people and the Hamas. It's like a 'tankie' versus 'anti-tankie' game, 'us and them', and nothing in between. If you don't choose, each side accuses you of being the enemy.

    Addition:

Just watched this interview (video + transcript). A journalist tells about his visit of tbe occupied territories in Palestine. At some point he arrives at one of the many checkpoints.

And I was walking to the checkpoint, and an Israeli guard stepped out, probably about the age of my son. And he said to me, “What’s your religion, bro?” And I said, “Well, you know, I’m not really religious.” And he said, “Come on. Stop messing around. What is your religion?” I said, “I’m not playing. I’m not really religious.” And it became clear to me that unless I professed my religion, and the right religion, I wasn’t going to be allowed to walk forward. So, he said, “Well, OK, so what was your parents’ religion?” I said, “Well, they weren’t that religious, either.” He says, “What were your grandparents’ religion?” And I said, “My grandmother was a Christian.” And then he allowed me to pass.

So there, even as you just walk around, you seem to be checked 'to whom you belong'.

  • That's not the point. I think that it is generally a bad idea if any government collaborates with such companies. So I agree that it's a detail and there are issues of higher importance, but a government shouldn't act this way.

  • @LemmyIsFantastic

I respectfully disagree. Rather than changing politics after decades of austerity, the government provides advice for energy savings through a device by Amazon, a company that spies on people and pays practically no taxes.

  • Assange hasn't been playing anything for years as he is imprisoned in the UK fighting his extradition to the U.S. while in other parts of the world he is being awarded -once again- for his journalistic work. He may or may not have an agenda, but the issue here is something else.

  • @HumbleFlamingo

There seems to be a concerted effort to try and smear liberals/democrats here lately. Attention grabbing headline that not untrue, just purposefully distorting the reality by conveniently leaving out important information.

You are right. The article leaves out important information, e.g., the fact that a wide range of politicians around the globe (more than 60 from Australia alone) and from a wide range of the political spectrum demand Assange's release, let alone journalists and human rights groups.

Unfortunately, there are many communities here on Lemny with that approach - if they disagree, it must be a smear campaign. A friend of mine recently called that the 'Trumpean I-am-right-and-everyone-else-is-wrong-approach'. I said it's maybe a glimpse of the culture of debate we can expect from the future.

  • I don't agree with all what the Guardian writes. It's not Trump alone, though.

Biden administration says bin Salman should be granted immunity in Khashoggi lawsuit

The Biden administration declared on Thursday, November 17, that Saudi Arabia's crown prince should be considered immune from a lawsuit over his role in the killing of a US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a turnaround from Joe Biden's passionate campaign-trail denunciations of Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the brutal slaying.
