Those things could be circumvented easily by just using the LTSC editions (which is what I always install for personal use), but it still bleeds out a lot of personal data to MS unless you disable services and block shit.
I dual boot, but to be honest, I haven't booted in Windows for a long long time, probably a few months. I use it at work (because it's easier, everything's MS centered) and that's about it.
There is also the thing with app capabilities in Win11 which pissed the hell out of me. Basically, if the app says that they can open this or that extension, it's not like in previous versions of Windows where you can choose which app is used to open this or that file type. It flat out BLOCKS other apps that are not a part of the OS (like media players) and you basically have no choice but to use the integrated ones. I just gave up, I have no intention of looking for a solution to this. I'm waiting for the Win11 LTSC edition, maybe that will have this issue fixed, maybe not, still, I will only boot to it if I have no other choice. So, yeah, I will have it installed, but it's a just in case scenario, if everything else fails.
Yeah, that is still too unsable in real world scenarios.
Still, it's great that people are doing this from scratch, not just build on what Oracle throws at us. I do wish they address the RAID5/6 issue properly, not just throw it under the carpet like BTRFS. I did hear that they are working on fixing RAID5/6 in BTRFS, but I haven't looked at how far things are. I still use it with mdadm in the background for the array.
The telemetry thing got really out of hand. Me spending more time on blocking shit instead of actually using the OS... sorry, but I'd rather invest that time in learning something new than trying to circumvent things that shouldn't be there in the first place.
I think an Arch/Void/Gentoo challenge just for him (no oponent, just to get it working with everything he needs) is what he should do now... make the fucker sweat a little π.
"Compile from source π€¨? WTF is that?... oh, you make the thingies that work in the OS from that thingie no one understands except the developers π¬... OK, let's give it a try"... dependency errors all around... "OK, that's it, I'm out!"
He is a Windows fanboy. He praises how some things are so simple to achieve in Windows (no doubt there, some things are), but lacks to mention how complicated others are... like let's say get rid or old updates... which used to be a real problem until a few years ago (I now understand that it is again a problem in Windows 11).
Start using a more "terminal heavy" distro, you'll learn the syntax by hart π.
Or just try and do more of the things you usually do with a GUI, over the terminal. I initially learned that so many things are just better done over the terminal. Why? Cuz the GUI doesn't usually have all of the options. This is usually not the case with Windows because almost everything is GUI based, Windows doesn't actually have an equivalent of what the terminal is in UNIX like OSes. That's why it has the CMD/PS/WSL mess that it has now. The combo of the three of them tend to replace what the terminal is in UNIX like OSes.
In the end, even they admitted (not publically of course) that true power comes from using a terminal/command line based tools. You can specify to do almost any combo of switches, something that a GUI can almost never do, especially with complex programs, like let's say, ffmpeg. Can you imagine how complicated a GUI would be if every possible combo of command line arguments can be made with said GUI? It'll be better off to just use the terminal, lol π.
He uses Windows for almost anything. The things he does use that are not Windows based are very few and he doesn't usually explain in detail what they are... because he doesn't know what they are.
There are companies that do prebuilt PCs around here. Heck, the prebuilt thing doesn't usually cost anything, you just point out the components you like and you get charged just for them, while getting the full assembled PC from them. Most of them will even allow you to give them components not purchased from said company, to put in the build. Even old (used) components.
You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain.
This is why I would never do anything like that for money. I either do it for the fun of it, or don't do it at all. I can stop at any time. Hey, it's been a fun ride, but I'm over this π€·. I've made an archive of the videos, in case this channel gets pulled down some day. Goodbye and fairwell π.
If there is documentation... subcontractors come and go, some leave documentation, others don't.
