I asked about this before and it seems the list of urls is fixed and can't be changed in-app. Jerboa just has a huge list of active instances pulled from wherever. Liftoff should just do that.

There's also Voyager (aka wefwef.) I like default Lemmy, but nice to see there's options.

Tap the bottom right icon (person) to go to your profile, then press the bookmark button in the top left. You will need to sort by something that isn't time-based ("Top 6/12 hours" only shows bookmarks from the last 6 or 12 hours.) "Active" works for me.

Someone submitted a PR for swipes. Seems like the function for a given swipe isn't something that can be changed yet, but at least it's there.

I think this is something clients/frontends can fix by grouping together communties of a similar name.

The app has to define specific links, so Jerboa just has a long list of instances copied from wherever. I wonder if Android supports changing these from the app itself?
