It looks like an fps coop game. Is the coop necessary or can it be played single player aswell?

Can be soloed. If you join an online game, you keep items and exp, but not the game world progress. When you quit, your own game world has not progressed.

It looks so good, I loved the first one even tho I played mostly solo and 2nd one seems like an improvement in almost every way, I wanted to wait a few months before getting it but that's getting pretty challenging with all the good reviews it's been getting
