If you haven’t yet, I recommend reading A Stitch in Time. It’s written by Andrew Robinson and the audiobook is read by him as well.
He is heterosexual for political reasons.
- I thought his sexual preference was simply never stated for political reasons.
  
  Think about it from the perspective of a Cardassian, not a viewer or show producer.
- He is political for heterosexual reasons.

I don't think the writers tried to make the character heterosexual, just the producers.
- with all of the subtle hints in the dialog over the years, one could argue that the writers were actively trying to subvert the wishes of the producers.
