I once tried to make a square, but I ended up with an octagon.

I've often said of my old boss that he "constantly demanded we cut corners and then was surprised and pissed when we ended up with a circle."
Fun fact, we have a similar expression in French, but we use "rounding" corners to describe a sloppy job.... So the joke actually works in french if you remplace the octagon by a circle.
Did you know that stop signs were originally supposed to be square? But because of time and budget constraints, they had to cut a few corners.
