Because this entire federation stuff is kinda shit, which is fine because it's done by a bunch of volunteers, and that brings all the upsides that every terminally Lemmy user breathes to tell you about, but it also makes it so there's always shit not working.

America is big. It's easy to make generalizations that don't apply.
