Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam (after Mecca and Medina). According to the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad was miraculously transported from Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and ascended to heaven there.
Al-Aqsa is, in the Jewish faith, considered to be the site of the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem. According to the Talmud, it is where the Binding of Isaac occured, the location of the Holy of Holies, and where the world was created.
- Friction caused by backwards religious fundies. Got it.
- Why did they storm the mosque? What would make them do that during Sukkot?
  
  Hamas yesterday fired 5000 missiles at Israel and took hostages which they called „Operation Al Aqsa Storm“. At a first glance, it sounds like the two incidents might be related…
Maybe that is the reason why Hamas is acting as they do.
- I thought it was more the whole decades and decades of genocide and stealing their homeland more than this specifically
  
  this instance is confusing to me. Everyone acts as if they didn't know Palestinians are being genocided since +50 years, and as if all this fighting has no historical context
  
  Well, and this might have been the straw that broke the camels back. It is no excuse for what they are doing, just a reason.
- Are you suggesting that this justifies the killing and kidnapping of hundreds of civilians? Yes, fundamentalist Israeli settlers are a big part of the problem but this new level of terror won‘t help anybody
  
  I never said anything about "justification". But it could have been the spark that ignited the powder barrel.

- Wait, are you suggesting that a bunch of fundies, praying at a temple, is a reasonable excuse to target high populated civilian areas, to maximize innocent deaths? Oh and add kidnapping to the list too.

  Possible that they would do this on a Jewish holiday. The raids of Al-Aqsa usually happen on Muslim holidays
