My friend is hosting a lunch at her house this weekend and everyone is bringing their children and partners. As the only childless person in the group, is it bad that I want to bail on this because...I don't want to hang out with kids this weekend?

Just be honest, and / or use my tried and true method. No explanation, just "something came up and I can't make it." Something that came up I don't explain that it was I didn't want to go. It's still honest. I can't lie to people, but omitting information likely to cause offense is nice.

In my car waiting to head in for this official event. Dilemma. I need to do a poop really badly, but I don’t think I’d ever get over the mortification of doing a poo in a diplomats house. I would, however, like the experience of pooing in a house that costs at least $15,000,000. The toilet alone probably costs more than my car.

Do it. Poo it. I once missed the chance to be invited into an old heritage listed mansion in Toorak with its own ballroom while I was working outside, because I felt awkward and thought I should beat the rain before heading home. I regret it to this day

The last couple of nights we've been having dinner early and having a light supper later on. It makes sense because the kid comes home from school hungry and by 6pm I'm starving. The man doesn't care when he eats. I normally do this on a Sunday but this is working so it might become regular.

I had to (well, chose to) wear heels into work today because I have an official thing to do straight after to do with diplomats so I need to look professional. As I was leaving the house I thought about packing flats or slides or slippers to wear under my desk or just around our floor, but couldn’t be bothered carrying something else into work.

And let me tell you that I’ve never regretted a decision so much in my life.

I feel that. I have some super kick-ass platform boots that I love (they also make me 11cm taller which is nice) but oh my God, I wear them for maybe 10 minutes and my feet are killing me.
I have to bring sandles if I wear them, but issue is I've gotta hold these big chunky platform boots.

But yeah, maybe it would have been a good idea for flats of some sort even for when you're on your way home.

Yesterday, I discovered that the doctor supervising the nurses doing the vaccinations at the clinic near me is a bit of an anti-vaxxer who tried to talk me out of vaccinating my daughter for COVID-19 (never mind the ATAGI recommendation is that everyone over 5 years receive it, and lots of recent science shows a clear net benefit for children of all ages and comorbidities), and played down the benefits and played up the risks. And when I said we still wanted to do it, he said the nurse would call back when they confirm they still have the vaccine in stock - and then they said it was too late to do it that day and we had to reschedule for Thursday.

It makes me sad that doctors get in the way of parents vaccinating their kids with vaccines that a committee of more specialised doctors than them have recommended every Australian over 5 should get. I wonder how many other parents he has done this to, not all of whom may have been such a strong advocate for their child as to push past the anti-vaxx nonsense coming from someone who should know better.

I don't know how that isn't bloody illegal???
Feels similar to when asking doctors about getting tubes tied, they always say no if the person is below a certain age and/or hasn't had kids yet. Like okay? Who cares?

Nearly every UK or Aus content creator I follow gets comments from Americans telling them “that’s not how you spell [insert word with UK spelling here]”. And at work we work with a US based web dev and he has gone through our website builds and mock ups before and “corrected” the spelling because it was “wrong”.

I've decided to take a day off on Friday for some self care and to have a long weekend.

Part of it is because there's no public holidays till next term and maybe the weather has been making it harder for getting up but a long weekend sounds like a good idea for me this week.

that fits. Hes been a gumpy little bugger the last couple of days, and today hes started grabbing and holding stuff a bit more properly.

Can I just say how lovely it is to have running water? I got up in the night to go to the toilet and the water was off. I had to find a bottle of water to wash my hands, after spending way too long with the tap on while my brain tried to compute the fact that no water was coming out. Can confirm that turn it off and turn it back on again does not work for plumbing.

Funniest one I saw was that Melbourne will loose its reputation as sports capital of Australia. Oh sure, the public will refuse to attend all other sports now because the commonwealth games are cancelled. I’m fine with it being cancelled. A lot of money spent for no gain, money could be better spent elsewhere.

I woke this morning to a leaking bathroom sink in my 5 year old house.

The stupid builders did not fit a drain (or waste) with an overflow so the water was pooling inside the sink cavity and causing corrosion.

I saw a replacement at The Warehouse for $30-something that did have an overflow but was crap. I kept driving to a professional plumbing supply and picked up a much better quality one for $40-something.

It was a good thing I had today off otherwise I would be brushing my teeth in someone else’s bathroom until Saturday.

- Sometimes I wonder if they don’t build houses shoddily so that The Warehouse stays in business selling $10 AliExpress crap with a 400% markup.

I'm having a crack at making steamed eggs. Going to have them on microwaved rice I think. If they work, could be a nice easy weeknight dinner option. Following the instructions in approximately 1 zillion youtube videos.

The no case is shorter, but, unlike the yes case, it includes web links for further reading. Seems like a bit of an oversight for the yes case committee... or some kind of strategic choice I'd be interested to hear the justification for.

Been so slow and tired and unmotivated today.

I'm extra tired today but work was active and I walked nearly ten ks all up today. I have been really emotional these last couple of days, but with all these super deep feelings being pretty new to me and tears of relief and joy, I'm not complaining.

I've gotta get a new job. there's this big change coming at some point. But its been so poorly managed and its going to change my work almost entirely and there's basically 0 assurances beyond "Oh yeah, we will keep you doing what you are doing", but this whole change is going to strip away all my responsibilities. I mean like, it MIGHT be fine, but I don't think I will be waiting in the dark to see what happens. The uncertainty is a killer. Looks like we just lost our second "Head Of" today too, this one was replacing the one who resigned 6 months ago for unconvincing medical reasons. I'm thinking its GTFO time.

I am SO bloody excited for this camping trip next month. I'm no closer to having decided what tent/swag Im going with, but I would sleep under a bloody tarp at this point if it meant getting out of this house. I just need a change of scenery.

Last time I went camping was supplied almost ten years ago.

I'm not saying the country is shit, the country is beautiful! but the major towns with the infrastructure to host such this ARE shit. Geelong is a shithole, Shepperton is worse. Bendigo is okay-ish but in the middle of F'n nowhere. Wodonga and Wangaratta both suck. its SUCH a Melbourne idea. As in, someone from Melbourne whos never gone to the country! These towns don't want upgrades to stadiums. They want better schools and hospitals. And more frequent trains to the city!
- Yeah, if cash is injected into regional Vic, it should be infrastructure and actually improving the towns. Not a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of an aquatic centre that the local council will have to upkeep for the next 20 years.

My brother sent a belated birthday gift over and I wanted to just save it. But he sent it because yesterday I mentioned Wynton Marsalis was coming to town and he knows how rarely I go out. So I looked up tickets casually just now and there was exactly one left so I decided yolo and booked it. I dunno if the MSO likes creating artificial scarcity to drive yolo purchases like mine, and I'm sure more tickets will be released, but if not, woops I guess I bought the last ticket.

Yesterday he went to the doctor and was given antibiotics. When I questioned him why, his response was "I don't know darling. Apparently my ears are severely blocked and I need to go back next week and he had a mask, face shield and full body armour on and I'm sure his 3rd language may have been English and I couldn't hear him properly and I wanted to get the fuck out of there". At that point I stopped all interrogations.

Ear infections suck; painful, disorienting and just a shit time.

Are women who work in IT sort of expected to wear make up? I need to start applying for IT jobs, and in my whole 27 years I think I've worn make up like three times - all of those being for dancing events when I was a kid lol and I'd really prefer to not start wearing it now

At any place I've ever worked: no (unless you want to)! And if any do expect that, it would be a red flag that it isn't a great place to work, so if they don't hire you over that, you would have dodged a bullet.

unexpected WFH day due to kidcalhoon2 being sick - i've actually got nothing I can do as I had lined up a bunch of field work....

Day 23 of exercise program and day 7 of tummy exercises completed. Once again I swapped out some of the exercises that might upset foot recovery for more tummy exercises. I'm not really getting the cardio I set out for, but at least I'm sticking to an exercise program for the first time in my life. I just keep saying to myself, there'll be time enough for that when your foot is better.

So far my plan has been to just get into a routine and stick to it. When I've finished this set of exercises, my next step is to begin another set but actually focus on my diet this time. Normally when I come home on pay day I'll bring a bottle of spirits and some alcoholic ginger beer to enjoy for the week. I've decided to cut that out, starting from yesterday. (You've inspired me Hongophones!) Also will benefit Mr Peeler as I noticed that the vodka and GB is disappearing quicker than my consumption alone.

Yay! Well done. You're well on your way to better health and in turn better self esteem. Being lighter on your feet is a wonderfully free feeling.
Alcohol gets turned into sugar by the liver or some other process. I've lost a bit more weight since I stopped drinking and started counting kms walked and my job is a workout in itself, which is nice. Waist is down from 34 last year to 30 though a bunch of that is atrophy of stomach muscles I think. I donated my scales, but I think I've lost about 10 kilos or maybe more. I'm shrinking and it's giving me a more femme silhouette, which is pretty amazing.
- You hit the nail on the head, as usual. I remember when I was lighter and it was easier to get around. When I was younger and drank like a fish, my metabolism was different and the consequences weren't the same weight-wise and in general on a personal level as they are now. I'm also inadvertently enabling Mr Peeler's drinking, which as someone with a heart condition he shouldn't be doing it. I'm not sure he'll ever give up drinking or weed. The way I see it, life is a journey of continual self improvement, so I can always be better even if those around me aren't on the same path.

If you got a dashcam, just block the road and force them to reverse.
If they choose to respond with violence, just close the doors and windows, keeping the camera rolling, while you just sit there giving them the death stare, without saying anything. See if this also baits them into a assault charge as well while you're at it.

Did my first ever trip (as captain in a 4-wheeled vessel) with my wife tonight. 60km round trip to Burwood and back.

Uneventful, except the construction muppets on the city-bound Eastern Freeway decided, in a space of 2km, to put up an 80, then 40, then 100, then 80, then 40 sign again before actually encountering any road work. Other road muppets simply ignore it and blazed past at 80 in the adjacent lane.

I remember being on the CityLink from the east once approaching the burnely tunnel and they closed every single lane into the leftmost one, opened it up, then closed every single lane into the rightmost one. So it went 80, 60, right lane closed, 40, middle lane closed, 100, 80, 60, left lane closed, 40, middle lane closed, then back to 100. Each section only lasted for one of the overhead speed limit gantry things, no wind, no roadworks, no roadworkers, no machinery
Deffo seemed like someone in the control centre was bored

I'm thinking about maybe upgrading my phone. I have a Google Pixel 3, and it's fine, just the battery dies quicker. Also the back glass on it is smashed a bit. But I'm just wondering if I should upgrade either to the 6 or 7. Or am I just thinking I need the "newest best thing". But also Google has (stupidly imho) stopped support for the Google Pixel 3. So if I at least buy a 6 or 7 I've got a few more years of support.

how long have you had the 3? the model is 4 years old now, so IF you had it from new and its served you that long I'd be inclined to go the latest model you can get in the hopes of replicating the longevity. With that said the Pixel A is usually just as gooder phone, if not better than the OG. Personally though, I'm apple after the whole "Android letting Facebook steal my wifes fertility data" fiasco.

You could save some cash and get a refurbished 5, 6 or 7? Check out reebelo or phonebot. They get refurbed pixels through quite regularly. I had a 4A up until recently. It was a great phone, I much prefer it over this Motorola.

If you're fine fiddling around with custom ROMs, then you can squeeze more years out of any existing phone. OnePlus, Samsung and Pixel being the easiest. OnePlus because of support, Samsung because of popularity and Pixel because it's the closest to "pure". Otherwise Motorola or Sony have the least bloatware after Google.

I've got a pixel 5 that I like. The 6 has a weird protruding camera area that I don't like the look of.
