My work placed infrared occupancy sensors under each desk yesterday without telling anyone. They point straight at the crotch.
Have a call with HR this afternoon about it, having raised concerns via email. This could prove to be a very interesting day.
- My guess is it's illegal. See: https://www.employment.govt.nz/workplace-policies/productive-workplaces/employee-privacy/ (under Monitoring and filming employees during work).
  But obviously seek legal advice if necessary.
- Can I presume that the intent is to check maximum occupancy to see if they can move to hot desking with less desks than people?
  But yes, infrared sensors pointing at the crotch seem like a bad way of doing it. The only method I've seen is having people walk around every 30 mins recording which desks have someone at them.
  
  We’re already hot-desking. This seems to be much more about surveillance unfortunately.

  Nah, the other kind of infrared sensor (i.e. just using movement to detect if you're there).
  They could be part of a totally innocent turn-the-lights-off-when-nobody-is-working system that doesn't track individual users or log data. They could also be part of a log-how-much-time-you-spend-on-the-toilet system.

Oh hey, spring is back. I'm not sure shitsville is really gone through.
I've been super tired the last few days. Probably related to the COVID going through the house that I never tested positive for (even after trying a throat swab). The kids are full of energy but also very fragile so it's a bad combination.
- I'd love to know the cause behind the false negatives RATs - is it the strain of the virus, the methodology of the sampling, or something about the individual themselves? It's seems to be quite a high rate for a false negative...
  
  I tested negative with one brand and positive with another brand ten minutes later. RATs are definitely not created equal. I've got both brands still in the cupboard (just in case) but can't remember which is which.
  But that was last year and I wouldn't be surprised if mutations have pushed the virus past what the tests can detect.
  
  I'm pretty sure RATs have become much less effective due to virus mutation.
  
  Other than being super tired I haven't really had other symptoms. It's possible the infection is being fought off enough to keep the viral shedding below detectable levels. It's also possible I have a different virus that isn't COVID.
  I'm in a flu study that gives us PCR tests when we get anything, but they only last week finished for the season so I didn't get to do a PCR to find out. They test for about 10 or 15 different viruses, so even if it's just a cold you often still get to find out exactly what virus. They still only get an answer about 50% of the time.
Pretty excited about the Cricket World Cup kicking off this evening, even though I'm not going to be able to watch much of it
- I'm not much of a sports watcher, but my wife is and kids like to watch so I'm sure there will be a lot of cricket watching in my house over the next little while.
