Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
Just wanted quickly pop in and say thank you all for your words of condolence this morning, they were much appreciated. It's going to be a bit sad for a while, but all will be well again soon.
Housemate has decided to have him cremated (he was technically theirs), and I've secretly called the crematorium to have him upgraded to an urn that looks like a sleeping cat, so he will look nice amongst their little fancy knick knacks shelf.
hugs
You're a good egg.
Big hugs dude.. losing a pet is rough.
At the local shops saw a bloke with a 'Vote No' t-shirt. Held my stare a bit too long and he saw me shaking my head.
He got a bit fired up and asked me if I disagree with his opinion.
I told him that I was actually wondering why he didn't buy one in his size, cause his gut was hanging out of the bottom.
He called me an 'abo cunt' and a few other choice words while he stormed off.
I love people sometimes :)
haha sounds like you ruined his day, well done
I figure he wanted a reaction from someone so I gave him one. I hope he's still muttering to himself.
-I told him that I was actually wondering why he didn't buy one in his size, cause his gut was hanging out of the bottom.
🤣 That's fuckin' gold mate! I hope he attended the burns unit.
Lookit my birthday babies, 11 today!
Aww kitty! Happy birthday!
HBD kittos!
Happy birthday kitties!
Happy Birthday beautiful furbabies!
So pretty! I hope there are birthday sardines (or treat of choice) 🐟🐟
Gorgeous purrsome babies with suitably interesting expressions
My wife really knows some really simple recipes that are delicious.
A few days ago she prepared some chopped up tomatoes, shallots, seasoned with a bit of salt. Loved it.
Last week when I asked her what she wanted for breakfast, she responded with rice and bacon, nothing else. Also loved it.
Perhaps she could post them on here.
Sure will do that:)
I won. It pays to hold a lot of random shit in your brain.
Congrations.
You doned it
Thanks. If mummy doesn't win, no one gets to snack. Dems the rules.
🍾🥂
Look it was a good game. Competition was tough. They played their best but yeah I just happen to come home with the chocolates.
For the love of God they're rewatching the match 🙃
Condolences.
They will also buy the DVD!!
Tattoos as well
Looks like dad may have just had food poisoning, he's feeling a lot better now so I've been released into the world. About to head back to the city but couldn't resist my curiosity for one of these local sausage rolls before I go. They must be good because they're the only thing sold out but they're making more, but I gotta wait.
lol just saw a regular youngish Melton family come out of the bakery.. ex-local footy legend type and a pub princess, with their 2 little rat tail haired kids around 5 or 6 years old. I thought "I bet one of them is named Jackson or similar", then the dad called out to one "Jackson!". I know my home town.
@CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone excellent call on the sausage rolls from that bakery. Very much home made style. They actually remind me a lot of the sausage rolls my ex used to make, which is fine because I liked them and her very much at the time.
I'm glad you liked.
Handing back bboi butters to SIL today.
He's had quite the adventure.
So glad nothing bad happened to him. Objectively every time I look after him it's just mind boggling how intelligent and clever he is. I thought my old abyssinian was up there but this thing is a few steps beyond that.
Bit of a relief handing back really. No type of door will stop that cat.
As I will soon be having my own kitchen (for the first time in 2 years) and I want to continue my healthy eating/losing weight, does anyone have some good websites for healthy dinner recipes? Trying to get on top of it so I don't get junk food under the guise of 'I just moved, you deserve it'.
Plus I am excited to learn to cook.
recipietineats is reliable and easy once you're back into the swing of cooking for yourself.
Added to my list. Thanks.
I just chuck stuff into a frying pan with butter, garlic, chilli, salt and pepper. Always turns out good
I love the Cordon Bleu books. They are super easy, have lots of pictures and use supermarket attainable ingredients. Lots of tins in their recipes and yet it's good food. https://www.angusrobertson.com.au/books/le-cordon-bleu-quick-and-easy-jeni-wright/p/9781592231980 https://www.amazon.com/Cordon-Bleu-Complete-Cook-Collection/dp/1571457151
Thanks! Added to my list.
Free recipes from the Australian Sports Institute with the option to buy physical copies if you wish https://aussie.zone/post/2527920
I will check them out. Thanks!
Welp that's the rest of my weekend fucked. I was ok with not going anywhere too far and once a day popping over to my friends place to look after her cats while she's interstate but this morning as I was taking her to the airport I got a phone call from my dad's friend saying dad's sick and he's asked if I can come and stay at the house. So I'll have to drive from Melton back into my place in Docklands, then scoot over to hers to look after the cats (no parking at hers) then come back here to Melton.
Dad has taken up residence in the lounge with a spew bucket so I don't want to be near that. I've just taken myself to a back bedroom where I've just got my phone to keep entertained, ready to be called in when he needs something.
I guess that means I could get a Buddy's pie for lunch though. I better not catch whatever dad's got or I'll be PISSED.
Oh gosh. I hope dad recovers quickly. Remember chunky beef pie. Their plain or curry pies are good too. Pop next door for a home style sausage roll for Ron.
I've come to feed my friends cats and I don't know why I'm speaking to them like they're little kids.
Today my evil plan to mow the lawns while the GF is on may have to be postponed due to hot weather (not good for lawns). So I'm going to start up the mower at 8.30 am precisely to wake everyone up so that they can get ready for the GF or whatever they plan to do. It's a public service really.
I read that post with GF as girlfriend, twice.
remember it's daylight saving tomorrow, or actually no don't remember, so everyone cam sleep an hour longer and wake up with their normal body-clock time
@SLfgb @Thornburywitch I’m up for a daylight saving strike!
And just like that a Trailing ice plant appeared
These flowers close at sunset which is trippy.
Pig Face. I used to collect it, then I lost most of it during a bad summer replanting exercise. I love the way it blooms so intensely for a few weeks each year. I planted out some garden beds with it at a rental which looked amazing in bloom. Then we left and the landlord had it all ripped out and replaced with... nothing, just bare shitty hydrophobic dirt
that's so beautiful
Always takes more time to cook in an unfamiliar kitchen and especially one that is cleaned so meticulously that you're conscious of keeping it spotless when you're done. Anyway, at long last, dinner is served. I posted more about the Mexican rice and the jackfruit side on Food Australia here. and after that post I put together a red cabbage and carrot slaw using this recipe.
i just want not collingwood to win
Two thirds of Melbourne and 99% of the rest of the country agrees with you.
🦁 🔴🟡🔵
I may have eaten too many party pies. It will be a light dinner tonight for sure.
This is the high quality content I come here for
It's Elmo after a big night out on the turps.
ang on a minute..
ohh
I had some mini spring rolls. Will have salad for dins I think.
Salad would be nice, but I don't think I have the energy for that much chopping. Maybe some toast, that fits my energy level.
I have made a new post in Food Australia for Minimal effort required recipes so if you have any please share them there. Cheers
I'm totally trying those cheesecake thingys.
Great for the kids to get involved.
One good friend of mine is a hard core Collingwood supporter. Another good friend of mine passionately supports Brisbane. Both want me on their side today. Today’s Grand Final will be…something I have to carefully negotiate. Help!
Channel your inner Switzerland.
"I just hope they all have a good time!"
Claim to be an Essendon supporter - rusted on. Both friends will then realise that you cannot be swayed and will cease their efforts to recruit you. If meeting up, take a scarf with you to whirl around whatever the result is.
Strategic migraine
Ate a bit too much and now stuck in a stupor. Have picked up groceries to cook for tonight and the one thing that snapped me out of feeling lobotomised was the outrageousness of paying $3 for one of those stupid little plastic trays of coriander - not even a whole bunch but a few measly leaves. I felt dirty paying for it because I had nowhere else to get any nearby. Coriander: definitely one of those things totally worth growing if you can.
Am I the only one that doesn't care about the game today? XD For me it's just a normal Saturday with chores and gym (but killer weather!)
Of course you're not the only one
If Collingwood win you'll hear about it every day for the next year. If the Lion's get up, give it a week. Pick your team.
Same. I’ll tune in around halftime to catch the Kiss performance, but that’s it.
2% of Melbourne was at the MCG today.
That's incredible!
Good news. I'm winning at trivia. Bad news. I need to brush up on my golfing knowledge.
Do you know why they call it golf?
Cause 'shit' was already taken.
Badum-tss
I'd like to play golf sometime and when I tee off, tighten the buttocks, big swing, let out a fart and an oooooo.
Went out rental scooting after taking care of the cats. It's lovely out. Missed a phone call from my nan, she leaves a voicemail message "it's not important, just wondering how your dad is" (no idea why she didn't call him) so I keep scooting. She calls 4 more times in 5 minutes. Leaves another almost identical voicemail message. Old people.
Nawwwww. My mum sends texts with the message followed by mum. Happy birthday. Xxx Mum
I might do the same. On the fence at the moment.
booooooo
Carn the Pies
I'll upvote you because that's not good sportspersonship. Good game.
Trying to psych myself up to crawl over to the shops for catfood, milk, and coffee. Ughhhh someone roll me over there.
🫸😴😴🛞🛞🛞🥫🥛☕🛞🛞🛞😴😴🫷
You can get a lollipop if you get there 🍭
What’s up with this halftime show? Bit of a snooze-fest.
I would love to see TISM play the final.
I was thinking that. After having the awesome Kiss on before the game, the half time performance just sapped the energy from me.
terrible music, cringe lyrics, bad sound-engineering... but the worst part was the lyrics of the last song - pure war-propaganda, just the kind of shit the likes of BRS would be into. Good game though
So glad work was quiet today. Stopped off at coles on the way home and I've never seen northcote plaza so quiet. It was also great for autistic butt to be able to shop at coles with barely any people. There should be grand finals every day. Also, I don't follow footy at all but may Collingwood die on the field and suffer in their jocks for eternity. I want to drink their miserable tears and gain sustenance and power from their grief.
Happy Game Day people. Should be interesting with the wind picking up.
Finally finished my last assignment for this trimesters unit. It was a group assignment. 4 in a group. 2 did nothing. How is it fair my grade suffers because of them?
Group work sucks. Online group work is even worse.
Welp, my day is ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable.
No one realises this but either way dentists still win.
All of a sudden my TV went mute then it changed channels 🤷♀️
Aliens.
AaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I don't enjoy knowing hot weather is coming. I do not like the sweaty time of year.
I'm not a fan of either summer or winter. I prefer to focus on enjoying the in-between times in autumn and spring and not dragging them down by focussing on weather I don't like.
Now that's finished who can't wait for the Big Bash to start 🖐
Glaze took 5-6 hours to process 4 small images on medium and just returned an error on my favourite one... Fuckkkk. But I can post the landscapes now (as late as it is). The picture of Melbcat can be posted tomorrow.
Keep in mind that while I did traditional art as a kid I've been art blocked for a long time. I'm also new to digital, this was done on a phone screen half the size of a hanky and also in the first few weeks of having the app. So I was and am still learning to use it. (If this post is still being weird - there are three pieces of art.)
::: spoiler Blue Mountain
:::This is the chronological first one. It's so intensely blue because it's meant to be at the 'blue hour' of dawn or dusk. I like the colours I randomly picked by eye but it's overall it's a bit dark to see well at smaller sizes. Opening it in a new tab helps.
::: spoiler Spring Morning Hill
:::I don't like these colours as much. I picked from a premade palette and the colours are a little samey. It's early morning and breezes are kicking up hayfevery pollen.
::: spoiler Desert Cactus
:::Same deal, premade palette. To be honest this was just done acting on a simple piece of advice for breaking art block. "Draw a cactus."
Digging the Spring Hill.
Others are good too, but that one gives me video game vibes.
Nice work
Thanks. Minecraft may have been in the back of my mind
You have a natural eye for composition and I like the simplicity and balance of your pics. I particularly like the Spring Hill one!
Thanks! I haven't been taught/read up about it or anything so just made up shapes
Brilliant and bright out in Brisbane today, gonna go to GOMA, have a nice lunch, stroll around and try not to get burnt, then get the hell back before all the afl excitement shenanigans potentially start.
It's worth noting how brown the grass is and how much earlier the jacarandas have come out.
Help!?
What on earth do you get a 12 year old girl you don't know well for a birthday present? She isn't close to my son and he's totally clueless as to her likes and interests.
Edit: Thanks so much everyone, I went from having no idea what a girl gets for a birthday to debating options with my son. I was set to get her the beads, even had them in my hand and he was certain that she wouldn't like them - instead she'd like a basketball. Which is what we ended up getting. I'm saving this thread though, there are more 12 year old parties on the horizon. I need to investigate Typo. It sounds like it fills the hole left from growing out of Smiggle.
A small gift pack from the Body Shop? That seems to be a safe default
Beads. Every 12 year girl I know (quite a few) loves making bracelets etc out of beads. There are kits at Spotlight & similar places.
I like this idea. Nearest Spotlight is far, though. I don't really have that kind of time. I have Kmart and Target, I might try there.
Edit: https://www.target.com.au/p/make-it-real-ultimate-bead-studio/63889567
Frank Green water bottle
Elite11 or White Fox hoodie
Typo is a treasure trove as well (stationary is good)
MCO beauty lip gloss (Woolys stocks that)
tix to Taylor Swift Eras tour movie
Cash. Remember how awesome it was scoring a $20 in a card?
I actually own a Collingwood scarf from back when I used to watch the game with my best mate and his family who were Collingwood diehards, it was more fun to follow with them. Especially when they won a grand final and we all got real REAL drunk and sang and cried and hugged. It was a good time. I haven't seen him or them for about 9 years. I should really get rid of the scarf because I feel nothing that they won just now.
I was given a very expensive type of Collingwood memorabilia and I gave it away knowing that person absolutely would love it and not sell it.
That's cool.
Send your old mate a text?
I think the time for that is long past. I don't have his contact details anymore.
I have eaten well today. Half a plate of fries and 2 meat pies and now have a fresh brewed coffee.
I’m actually still pretty full at the moment.
All while watching the grand final.
It's a close one! Idk who's gonna take it this year!
I've been binging out on coffee and arnotts all-sorts haha ugh
I know! I feel the same. It’s a very good contest at the moment and the lions just evened wit up coming back from the break.
Turning out to be a really good game!
The biscuits sound like a good idea with the coffee.

Not in a great mood but we're gonna get there people we're doin the thingos!
🤗
How much longer until the game is over? I've had to close my 3 out of 4 of my windows to block out the screaming from a few houses down but I really need the breeze 😭
My glutes and calves are on fire from yesterday's hike.
Can barely make it to the fridge for beer refills
I tried this drink
https://cbco.beer/products/hazy-new-england-pale-ale
And I have to say very nice. Nice beer with a hint of passionfruit. I may get a little sloshed.
18C overnight? I don't know how to process that.
Eww yuck. Last night was 16 degrees as well.
??? In the same way you think about anything else. 🤷♀️
I can't physically bring myself to turn the air con on in September. I'll suck it up.
But I disapprove and would like to speak to the manager, please.
Ooh we get another day of weekend tomorrow. Even if it is slightly shorter than usual. It feels like Sunday night BUT ITS NOT!!
First unit viewing done. Um.
For those of you who've dealt with a body corporate before - what's involved, what are the pitfalls and would I be better-off removing my own epidermis with a potato peeler than dealing with one?
If you still frequent the OtherPlace try r/fuckHOA for a general idea
ahhh 2 hour nap you were just what I needed after getting up at 6am today
It's so damn hawt. MILK WAS A BAD CHOICE.
🌕Moon pretty🌕
You're pretty
Pretty silly you mean
after the loss, we also lose one (1) hour of sleep tonight.
Nah, it's all in the framing. We win both a Collingwood premiership and lovely long evenings all at once, yay!
The microwave and oven will once again emerge from the past. or future?
My analogue wall clock will be right!!
Catfish if you read this do you still need a spring cleaning guide because here's one
Cool, Thanks! Working on the clutter bit. Looks like it will be a full moving house job though.
Good luck
Got 3 op shop vinyls today. 2 of Elizabethan airs and dances using original instruments and a dudley moore trio album. The Elizabethan ones are really nice, kind of like listening to a movie of a Shakespeare play.
The last I haven't played yet. Dudley was a very good musician and composer, the album could be either awful or amazing. Won't know until I play it.
We really need to discuss nepo babies in the AFL. Too many legacy names.
Several people in this broader residential complex must be watching the footy, there's been a few muffled squawks coming from some of the apartments and townhouses and I'm fairly confident it's not from the varied avian visitors to this area.
Exercises completed in between loads of washing. I decided it was perfect blanket washing weather and have been doing just that. I didn't realise I had so many of the damn things!
I've run out of potatoes (shopping tomorrow with the Minipeelers so they can choose some healthy snacks that they will actually eat). It makes me realise how much we eat potato. The only time we don't is if we're having something with pasta or rice. God I'm a bogan!
Potatoes are awesome, that is all.

I went to Temu to buy some string, and ended up buying many things. Hopefully Miss Meow likes her new toys. I almost bought a Christmas tree shaped cat scratcher too, but managed to stop myself.
Ugh. I left wet clothes in the basket overnight. Glaze is taking even longer than it should because not enough memory, so I might as well load those back in for another wash and do a few dishes. Maybe I'll even pop it on a short timer so I can grab a shower first.
Well, I opened my mouth a bit to soon. It appears kitty passed away sometime in the night on the couch nestled among the pillows. Had to wake the poor housemate up and give her the news, and she is not taking it well.
R.I.P to the little man himself.
So sorry to hear that. It's never easy for us, but it does sound like he had about as good a passing as possible.
Oh, no. But at least your little man passed peacefully and in a lovely comfy place.
Rest well, little one. Topes is probably wandering over to sniff you as I type.
I'm sorry to hear that.
I’m so sorry. He had a wonderful life of stealing prawns and passed peacefully with his owner thinking of him.
oh no :(
Really sorry to hear that.
I'm so sorry 😞 it sounds like he passed away comfortably at least
So sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry. Hugs to you all.
💙💙💙
Oh man I'm sorry. At least there's some comfort to be had in a peaceful passing.
