Why is the US continuing to back Israel despite starvation claims and renewed assault on Gaza?
On a recent episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Senator Bernie Sanders blamed Washington’s reluctance to change course on the financial muscle of lobbying groups. “If you speak up on that issue, you’ll have super Pacs like Aipac going after you,” Sanders said, noting Aipac’s record $14.5m campaign to unseat Democratic representative Jamaal Bowman after he accused Israel of genocide.
That's why. AIPAC. They are insanely powerful. They hold incredible influence over our Federal government. Some conspiracy theories are true.
- That’s why. AIPAC Exactly, but the American Evangelicals need a shoutout here as well, their unwavering support for Israel to bring about the rapture is also a massive factor.
- I think people are a bit too quick to pin everything on aipac. But you don’t have a state apparatus that’s so dedicated to a policy without multiple reinforcing mechanisms. It’s also anti-Arab racism, it’s also realpolitik and imperial considerations, it’s also the fundamentalist Christian death cult, it’s also the left’s inability to organize a coherent and appealing message, it’s American apathy, fear, and so on.
- AIPAC aligns with the interests of the US State Department, it's not like the US is opposed to what Israel is doing in the region but can't do anything about it because AIPAC money. The interests are either monetary with the MIC, geopolitical as wielding Israel as an arm of US control over the middle east, and/or ideological with Christian Zionism. They are practically completely dependent on US weapons and support on the international stage, the US is in control in this relationship
  14 mil is nothing compared to the 14 bil in weapons sales to Israel alone (it was aid, so we the US taxpayers footed the bill, not Israel), let alone the military contracts to develop tech used on civilian populations. The MIC profits immensely just on the testing of new tech on the Palestinians.

  I think it's more accurate to say that the US state department aligns with the interests of AIPAC, because that's just how much influence and power AIPAC has.

  Many in the US are opposed to what Israel is doing, but those people have very little representation in the Federal government, largely because of the power and influence of AIPAC.
- AIPAC isn't just Jewish lobbying. It includes fundamentalist christians who are eager to see the rapture. These insane fucking nutjobs are excited to watch the rest of us burn when they get floated up to heaven.
- I think it’s part of the reason; the other part is that the representatives are simply not good people , and a significant portion of the population wants to kill people
  
  The vast majority of Americans want a weapons embargo on Israel. Even the slim majority of Republicans at this point
So do something about it. Send in peace-keeping troops to neuter the IDF. We've been calling for intervention for over a year and a half.

  If you genuinely believe assasinating a politician is going to make others go "Wow, maybe I was wrong" and there won't be 5 replacements in line, then you're the type of person who probably celebrated 7 Oct thinking "that will show them"
- You can't do anything in the short term, but if you want to make sure this ends as soon as possible/doesn't happen again, you have many options. Look up BDS and see what Palestine activists near you are doing.
- Speak about it, tell people around you and protest.. put signs of soldirity up, there are many little things you can do just think what you can afford.
- And Democrats.

Edit: nevermind I was looking at the article on my phone and it formatted something weird
Fletcher said five trucks of aid went into Gaza yesterday, but described this as a “drop in the ocean” and totally inadequate for the population’s needs.
He said the aid lorries, which contain baby food and nutrition, are technically in Gaza but have not reached civilians as they are just on the other side of the border.
- I also read from other sources that much of the perishable food on the trucks is now rotting because they have been held at the border for so long.
UN keeps wringing its hands about it, without wanting to do anything about it.
- It's not their job to do something about it. It is countries of the UN that have to do something about specifically those with nuclear powers.
