Don't know a better place to ask, but is this iron ore? (More in post)

Found in NW Florida not far from known iron deposits. Yeah, rocks are rare as hell here, but there's an historic site a couple of miles away where they found ore and forged tools for a water mill.

It could be. It could be slag from refining. If it is ore it's not very high grade.
- That's a pretty good guess, but it also has grains of sand in it. I expected slag to be more uniform.
  Anyway, the red and orange colors could still be connected with some iron compounds. If it is slag, then it was somehow mixed with regular sand. That could still happen if you pour molten slag on a new dump area. The later batches will be poured on older slag, so they don't really get to mix with anything.
  
  This was found on a trail in the middle of nowhere, hence the sand.
