Another job reached out just now!
Fuck yeaaaaaah.
You da man in demand! 👉🏼😎👉🏼
Hot stuff on the market, bidding open!
So, the Vulture article about Neil Gaiman...
Question: what would you do with his books after reading it? I have American Gods, Norse Mythology, and two short story collections Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile Things. They were my safe books when I was a teen, read them religiously, to shreds.
After reading that article... I... Just... What would you do with those books? They mean so much to me... But... Gaiman is monstrous.
If you've experienced SA and abuse, be warned, the article is extremely graphic and detailed. I'm so mad and upset.
Opinions/suggestions welcome.
I think its important to separate the art from the artist. For example: Starship is humanity's best hope for a brighter future in space right now regardless of how you feel about Elon. And I love the harry potter books despite her take on things. At the end of the day he already won in the sense that he has your money. Throwing the books out serves only to deprive you of something you enjoy.
I'm not saying forgive. And I wouldnt give them any more money (though i brought hogwats legacy when it was like 20 bucks). But whats done is done in the sense of purchasing them.
Never meet your heroes rings very true these days hey.
This is my view as well. You've already paid for the books. You've already supported him. Putting them in the bin doesn't unsupport him. Although if it's only going to bring you sadness seeing them on your bookshelf, or you don't think you'll be able to read them again knowing what sort of person he is, maybe a donation to an op shop might be an option.
I dunno. Donating the books is the option I'd choose, but it depends on your own beliefs, values, and moral compass. Personally, I don't see it as supporting his work, because no money goes from the resale back to him or his agents in any form. And I'm pro preservation, and see destroying works created by awful people as throwing the baby out with the bathwater. But there's also the angle that you could be introducing and enabling the spread of his works
Mine went in the recycling bin this morning. But 1, he's not someone I idolised at all. I liked his kids books, struggled with his adult stuff, and hadn't actually read anything of his in years, so I'm less attached than some.
And 2, as a librarian I'm long past the idea of books as sacred objects- mass market paperbacks anyway. I donate my unwanted books to the op shop but these will be unsellable at the moment, the op shop will just chuck them. And I'm quite used to putting large piles of withdrawn library books into the bin. But I know it shocks some people.
Oh neat. Same profession as me.
I dislike the withdraw bin, but it stops 'helpful' people bring the discards straight back to you!
I’m currently reading that article as well! Weird. I have his books. His writing is VERY good and yet he is among the worst humanity has to offer. A classic dilemma.
Throw them out if it makes you feel better
agree, his writing is very good
This is a hard one.
Do you often reread them?
Hang on to them for now, you don’t have to do anything with them right now or make a hasty decision.
Give it some time and revisit them, if you can bring yourself to read them again or it invokes I’ll feelings then maybe at that point think about getting rid of them.
It’s all going to depend how you think about them as a collection or keepsake and what you’ll feel about them by keeping them and if you do while reading them again.
these are accusations of serious crimes
let's wait for the trial , ( I'm a fan of putting people in prison )
regarding his books , I read Sandman among other books, gives the rape scenes a bit more context , 🤨 hence the accusations don't surprise me.
( 30 minutes later, can't get that Sandman book out of my head now. In the book the main character buys a Muse, a Greek goddess who inspires. He constantly rapes her and his writer's block is overcome. 100% of Gaiman's work is inspired by evil 🤮 )
the question is, who covered for him, who allowed him to get away with it for so long ,
what to do with the books , no idea, no one will want them
a good use would be burning in a wood stove this winter, otherwise, land fill
I just read the Variety article. 🤢 shudders
Edit: It’s such a moral dilemma. Reminds me of the whole Gill Sans thing with Obama’s campaign. Not excuses, but I always think, this is only the stuff that has been brought to light about someone who has been caught/called out.
2 options: Take a photo and toss them or pack them away.
Mine are already packed, so I have some time to think before I need to look at them in person. When I discovered the vile things about MZB I ultimately decided to keep them. Gaiman is less embedded in my brain so I may not this time.
Scott Auckerman of Comedy Bang Bang has a rule you can enjoy an artist's work until you found out. So you can go back an read the books you've already read, but maybe don't go reading anything of Gaiman's you haven't before
It's kind of exciting looking for new roles. Picked up a bunch of useful skills and lingo where I am now so have been able to go for better roles.
Let's see how all this plays out.
Scrum, Stand up, agile, boil the sea and process mapping!
Gather the artefacts! Process flow! Service delivery! Suck my balls!
It's amazing how easy it is to sound qualified if you have confidence, a sales background and a firm grasp of terminology lol
Edit: I'd like to add stakeholder fucking management to the list. Over and fucking over. It's the main part of my role i.e taking the punches for the company but i still hate that title.
Haven’t heard boil the sea before - what’s that?
Just remembered that I can work google, lol. What a weird phrase
Ya mean scum?
So I have an old PC, and I'm thinking of learning how to make a DT bot and using that PC to be it's 24/7 server, that way no one here has to give up their sleep or risk a double-post anymore :) it's about time we get another botbot.
I'm going to start looking into it tomorrow, regarding making one, and thinking of contacting the other City instances to see how they made theirs. I need to fix up my partner's PC anyway, so I'll be in the spare room regardless lol!
If anyone has any tips or anything I should know, please message me :) happy to collaborate as I've never coded anything let alone a script. But I'm willing to learn!
I've offered to do this multiple times and no-one seemed keen. I think it's because people like the human nature of of the post being made by someone real? I dunno. Weird.
Please do not run it on a local PC though as you'll chew through expensive power for an operation that takes milliseconds.
If you want to run it local you could get it running on an rpi or even your mobile.
But don't do that, even the free tiers of all the cloud providers are overkill for the bot requirements. A cron lambda solves this, same on Azure as a Function and will all be free and not reliant of the power to your house.
The emojis you can do to via a List of special days, and then combine them with an AI to get the sentiment of the previous day and theme for the current day.
Please add a CI/CD pipeline that's included in code and open source it so someone else can pick it up when you drop off. Pretty please add many tests.
This isn't something I want to pair on as it's a great first project and something that if I was going to do myself I'd rather just smash out and have fun doing whilst listening to music, not chatting.
If you get stuck though lemme know and I might help.
I'm keen tbh! Keen for a bot and help! Thank you for these tips!!! This is my first time doing anything like this at all!
Oh the PC was also going to be a media hub as well, something I can keep on to download torrents and store media files 🏴☠️
Oh, sorry. I've never seen your offers before, I don't think
Personally, I do kind of like the human touch, as you put it. Makes me feel like I actually contribute something to the community, anyway
By the way chud, I get the weather from the BoM, and they seem to have an API (though it seems to be more of a mindfuck than most). I believe AccuWeather has an easily accessible API as well. You could pull the weather forecast from that
I was starting to do this but have run into walls trying to get Docker to work and editing the files to configure it.
You can find existing bots on github that just need a text file changed with the login details for the bot, where to post, and what to post. You can even tell it to pin a post and how long for.
Here are two to look at, you can either clone or download the repo to your machine:
https://github.com/arcuru/lemmy-rss-bot
https://github.com/SleeplessOne1917/lemmy-bot
I'll check which one I downloaded to my computer when I can. It's part of my whole learning linux/remote desktop/making a server project I tinker with when I have time
Sounds like a solid idea! Just chuck me a heads up so I don't steamroll BotBot2
Also, if keeping the PC constantly running eats up too much electricity or space, I'm happy to host it on a VPS I already have. It's in melbs, so still local. I'm too much of an idiot to figure out how to get the code actually working though, which is why I've never done it
Basically: if you do all the work and figure out what needs to be done to get it working, I'm happy to pilfer it, host it myself, and claim all the credit 😁 /j
Edit: since you asked, and I forgot to answer, but also offered: if you ever did hand over any form of code to me (or really anyone else from the DT) make sure that the bots email/password aren't hard coded in the code. No matter how well you know or trust someone, there are very few situations you should hand them this info. The exception maybe being if somebody is helping with you over a call or something. Even then, I'd probably recommend you only do that if you have to, and you know personally know them IRL. But you probably know all of that already. Never hurts to reinforce it though
I thought someone had sort of got one working for a short while, a while back?
Rn there's a dickhead circling the block in a fart cycle. Next round he's getting a fucking cinderblock to the face
I have a deep dislike for noisy vehicles.
I didn't mind being in the office at the old contract because it was a massive floor and not everyone was in at the same time, so the place was mostly empty.
It messed with my expectations for this job as it's a much smaller office and everyone is in at once. Going from a government department to a sales led organisation and it's much noisier as well
nothing worse than a noisy office.
Smaller office, more people, and a lot more phone activity. I didn't mind the old contract because I'd go in to a massive empty office and still mostly be by myself. The only downside was having the walkway facing desk, but I was just a contractor so I didn't have seniority for the good desks
Back at work today. I feel like I haven't really had a break at all. Back to having some income coming in thank goodness, it's been a scary few weeks!
First train trip into the CBD since late November. So uneventful. Can't even complain about it.
The intrepid ticket inspectors at Parliament we're busy bullying young people though.
discovered the incredible stretch of just having the mrs sit on my thighs, tailbone or lower back. There isnt a sex joke here which is how you can tell im serious. I actually groaned and shuddered when she sat on my tailbone. Suspect my back is rooted.
I had a friend's cat end up walking on my lower back quite unexpectedly and that was pretty... enlightening
I mean, Iove being walked on. That part is amazing if they hit the right spot.
cant wait till tinyest is old enough to do that and be trusted not to jump.
I rearranged my pantry items and it still looks full but atleast all the sauces are on the left and we won't starve now with the 3 cans of pineapple I found buried.
My pantry is narrow and deep, who knows what's lurking at the back. I should sort through it more often but it's not a job I enjoy.
Mine is too. I do it maybe once a month and it still amazes me when I see that can of peaches in there.
I really need to do this.
The patch. Heaps of buds/flowers now. looking heaps better than last year.
The books will remain on the bookshelf, until I am in a better state of mind; I'm triggered and having my own flashbacks so I recognise that I am not in a position to make decisions on sentimental books.
Thank you for everyone's input, I really appreciate your ideas and perspectives 💜
If it happens further down the line after you’ve settled then you know you’ll have to pack them away or throw them away.
I just got home after work. No wonder I was thirsty when I got to work this morning - my morning cup of tea was still sitting on the kitchen table untouched. I hadn't even put milk in it. It was just on the other side of the table so clearly I didn't notice it this morning.
Sleep is farked and I have an early appointment. Pray for Mojo
Thank you to all who shared their thoughts on how long they think is too long to commute for a job. I think I'll apply anyway to have a chance at something, but it's probably not my first choice. On the upside, I would beat the traffic for the most part.
Yeah I'd 100% go for it. Even if the commute does suck, maybe in a year or two you'll be able to use your experience to get a similar job in your area
Commuting is one of the worst parts of a job bit I'd do it for the right place. I had a contract role at the CSIRO and I had to drive across Melbourne for it. I'd still do it if I could work for them again
Ha! I had to fly Melbourne to Canberra to do work at CSIRO occasionally. I only needed to do it like 4-5 times, mostly I worked remotely. But that was a commute.
Uninstalled all the fast food and delivery apps today. Who could possibly be anything resembling healthy when KFC's sending you 30 nugget for $10 deals?
So dark in the house today. I much prefer natural light to turning the lights on, but it’s too dark.
I'm winning. 8 - 6. The sledging is getting good. He's plying me with soju. Things could change quickly.
This is why you should train yourself for drinking. 👍
Apparently soju is a weakness I have.
Keep dreaming about cars the last couple of nights, so I googled if you still gotta "run in" a new one. "1000 miles, vary the RPM but keep it under 4k, and for christs sake stay off the boost". Well. Fuck me. Reckon i can pay extra and get the dealership to do that for me? There is no way in hell I'd be able to drive off the lot and not light up the turbo, only been dreaming about this (so far) for 15 bloody years! And before you say "but TinyBreak, just drive up and back to Sydney". they specifically say no long highway drives. So you gotta take it up the hills and NOT play with it. I may need to recruit the mrs, though not entirely sure she'd behave herself either.
Go up the Black Spur and back, it's a fantastic drive! It's hard not to take the corners like a demon tho 😭
I mean, great idea in concept. But the temptation to slip back to 3rd and boost round the corners would be like the equivalent of teenager his first girly mag. Have 0 faith in myself not to go full rallyfuckboi. Edit: but yeah truly a great drive!
Just think of the money you will have wasted if you ruin your new engine straight away. Patience is required.
Its (or it will be) a subaru. Its preruined in the factory 🙃
I feel this. It is too familiar for those of us who have been victims of such people before. I have difficulty believing those women are lying, the details are too real to me.
He grew up in scientology, I hope they grab him and have him scrub the floors of their sea org boat for the rest of his billion year contract.
He's not getting any of my money any more. He's dead to me.
WHY AM I AWAKE
shelf removed from laundry cupboard. Template mapped on new piece of specrite board. Next steps: make the actual rail part of pull out clothesline rail and mount on slides.
Last night out west, as much as I have enjoyed blobbing out and being fed like a queen, and the quietness, I'm ready to go back to Melbourne and my independence (despite the toils that come with it) and my friends.
Won't push myself too hard when I return to work on Wed but from next week it's time to ramp up
Stupid day to have the grumps.
Got a hairy from the teaching school which yes, I know the risks, but this time they really didn’t listen. It’s the first time I’ve actually felt a bit pissy about it in years. Normally I’m just like eh it’s hair, it’ll grow back, but I realised I’ve been maintaining this semblance of a style and now it’s all been straightened out. I’ll get over it. Privileged problems.
The other one was $70 for 5l of isopropyl alcohol. (No I didn’t buy it.) Some cleaning suppliers are a rip. Even Kryolan was selling for $20 cheaper.
/eog
I really can’t be bothered doing the big clean up today. I should have planned my week better.
Are you cleaning up a murder scene of some description?
I mean… I could be?
Haha.
5l of isopropyl
That's a lot.
A lot of mirrors.
Went to a gig at The Forum last night and it is a stunning theatre. Could not see much because short and squished, but was a nice night of music. I hope to go see more live music but local acts next time, and I might actually be able to see the band.
Love The Forum!
I can relate. I only hate being short when I go to a gig, because everyone else seems to have gotten the tall gene 😂
I haven't measured my height in ages, but I'm pretty sure I'm between 150 and 160cm, so not terribly short, but tall people like gigs so it's a pain anyway. Suddenly all the 6ft-whatevers come out of their vaulted-roofed houses 😂
And somehow they have the luck of sitting or standing right in front of you!
reading some posts on various discussion boards about western tv shows and so many people comment on how First Nations people of America have beautiful and cool names.
I think people have forgotten we have beautiful names too, we just use very old forms of our names so in everyday life we forget the true meaning.
In my circle some people's names mean:
Beautiful Maiden
Mercy
Beloved of God
Protector
Noble Born
Vigilant
Lover of Horses
God of Fire
Free Man
Bringer of Light
Mine is from Hyacinthus, the lover of Apollo, killed by a discus to the head. Possibly by accident, or possibly by a jealous Zephyrus (the west wind) who was upset Hyacinthus didn't love him and preferred Apollo.
Also makes me laugh because I loved Keeping up Appearances
"It's pronounced Bouquet" 😂
I've already doxxed myself here a few times so I'm not fussed sharing my etymology.
George Foreman named 4 of his sons George. One daughter's name is Georgette and I think a couple of his girls have George as their middle name. This makes me laugh.
I think there’s still a few with literal meanings, but they’ve gone out of fashion. Eg Dawn, Sage, Ruby, Victor.
Also celeb culture. I'm named after a great-great-aunt, who was named after one Queen Victoria's daughters cos g-g-a was born in the same year as said daughter.
I'm hoping no-one, I say no-one, will name their unfortunate girlchild Karen in the foreseeable future.
Mine means: From/of the Ocean. (My dad was a diehard surfer until his reconstructed hips gave out on him at around 68 y.o)
Back home and it's unsurprisingly several degrees hotter than outside; started sweating after a minute inside... Might need double melatonin to help myself conk out asap tonight. Kind of good to be back. Looking forward to seeing my colleagues tomorrow
I follow Saxsquatch on YouTube and I'm trying to figure out his livestreams. They must be old streams put together because there's no way someone could play saxophone for 18 hours
So, I'm not normally a fan of Christmas fruit mince pies, BUT the local iga didn't sell them all during Christmas time so they had them on clearance for 50c for a 6 pack last night!
Certainly beats the other thing they had on "clearance" which was a packet of shapes for $3
missed out on those 50c marshmallow santas this year. those things slap!
Bummer! They are pretty good!
Franny? Fanny?
It's something-anny I think, her second name I can't make out
Edit: Harry? Perry?
Edit: oranniy ugh
Fanny Louisa ????? Surname is obscured, but might start with G. Effing copperplate.
Nah the surname is Jennings same as Edwards.
Jennings is clear to me, the first name eludes me. Given the book age there is a typical group, which this doesn't fit.
To me it looks like Carney.
I'm going by the fact I can write cursive.
Nearly felt suckered into buying a couple of books at the airport store... but nope, as much as I like the feeling of pages through my hands and not staring at a screen, I ain't paying full RRP and I don't have space for more books anyway. And I had a $50 Amazon voucher so phone kindle it is.
Airports are pretty much the only place I buy books (except on Audible). Consider me a sucker 😭
Man, there is just something romantic and satisfying about having a paper book at the airport and on the plane
I just dated a file for work "14.10.24". I have no idea how I came to write this as today's date, it's so horribly wrong. I'm still struggling to date 2025 instead of 2024, takes a while for me to adjust.
laughs in cheques dated 1985
Anyone delt with a conveyancer whose name implies doing precise things to punctuation? They are the major problem here.
feel like the day is awastin except I was up at 6and did 1.5hrs housework, then watched some telly and had the rest of my sleep
the rest of the day I'll just potter in the garden
I wouldn’t call it a waste of a day.
I’m sitting here watching the women’s odi cricket today since 10am and it’ll end probably between 4-6pm.
I’d say you’re super productive compared to me.
What's awastin
Time
A New Word Has Been Added To Your Vocabulary
you raise an interesting to me usage of the english language
why and when do we put an "a" in front of a word 🤔

My stupid question of the day.
What is Sherlock Holmes' first name?
Luckily I stopped that one before I said it out loud to Mr Seagoon, he would never let me live it down 🫥
You coulda doublebluffed him, ACD sketched out some stories with the character not named Sherlock but sherrinford holmes. So technically that was his first name.
Not really related, but you reminded me that one of my workers from 2 places ago (the last resi) called me "Sherlock" for 4 and a half years. She told me how to do something I was already in the process of doing, so I said "no shit Sherlock" (I was 12. This was 2019.) Then I became the Sherlock lol. I saw her a few months ago, and I was still Sherlock lol
Um, isn't Aotearoa New Zealand pretty much the same as Mount Fujiyama? Like doubling up when there's no need to do so? I think I'd pick one and use that rather than both. Would depend on context I guess.
And we live in a city with a street named "High Street Road" which can be depended on to crack up visitors until they get familiar with Melb's weird but practical road name conventions.
I think so, but I've seen it used that way a fair bit. It seems to be more commonly used than just Aotearoa
I said goodbye to my beautiful cat today. My house feels empty tonight.
E: thank you all.
I'm sure you gave it a wonderful life.
The hardest of goodbyes. Hugs to you and headbonks to Tommy in heaven.
Hugs. I hope you're feeling alright
my god, I am so, so sorry for your loss.
Fuck….😕
So sorry to hear that. Hugs.
So sorry to hear :(
My sincerest condolences, that sucks mate 😞
oh.. So sorry to hear that.
I’m so sorry. It’s heartbreaking to loose a pet. Sending warm wishes.
Sending you loads of love and warmth 💜
Condolences and hugs mate. 💜
oh no. So many hugs.
I'm so sorry ❤️❤️❤️
So sorry to hear that. Sending internet squishes if you wish them.
I’m so sorry, that’s really hard
Sorry maggies. Biggest hugs 🫂♥️
I’m so sorry. Thank you for taking care of Tommy and giving him love.
I can see Melbcat getting older and I’m terrified of it.
Rest in peace, sweet kitty.
Just saw this... my sincere condolences. I hope Tommy puss felt how loved he was in his last moments. We are here any time you need to unload.
I am so sorry to read this. 🖤
Sending you my love 💜
