Painted by my maternal grandmother (passed away ~25 years ago). View from their beachside Queenslander, looking past their old frangipani across Deception Bay to Bribie Island, QLD.
Doing this tech support for old people really goes to show how hard phones and apps actually are to use.
Features are hidden behind things like long taps. Tapping on someone's profile photo brings up stories instead of their profile. A person's Facebook profile looms different to their messenger profile.
And maybe it's because I've never owned an iphone but I don't find them initiative at all. There are times I can't figure out how to exit out of something or how to bring a screen back up compared to all the android phones I've had
I hate iPhones and apple products. My first apple product was a second hand iPhone and I found it so hard. Next phone was android and I've never looked back. Android feels more like a PC interface, and I find it waaaaay more intuitive than iOS. Maybe in dumb, but iOS is so hard for me to use.
Besides, I really like the customisation of Android, it's feels more mine.
I hate apple tv with a passion. If people are foolish they install all their other apps, ie, tv stations, onto apple and then they have to go thru extra layers of button pushing on apple to just watch a netflix or abc show or movie. Also, the apple remote is the worst, it requires great manual dexterity and precision to select anything .
I'm very good with tech, I read instructions carefully, I look up the faqs as well. I just hate useless tech for the sake of tech. I keep it simple.
I fell like IOS is almost too simplied, like they've taken too many options away from you. And there is too little contrast between elements to interact with.
It looks nice because it's almost like looking at a blank white screen, but you see what a problem it is when someone unfamiliar with technology goes to use it
The other thing is signing up / logging in for various things and the many many hoops you have to jump through sometimes. They get frustrated and quickly. I always point out to the p's that there's no point getting frustrated at inanimate things, take a breath, someone else has likely had the same problem, and we'll work it out.
They can fuck off with logging in for everything.
Like people creating icloud accounts they forget the password for and Microsoft's constant badgering about its services.
There needs to be an EU style law exported to the rest of the world that you need to be able to setup and operate a device without any type of account or registration and without the nag factor to do so
The problem is most buyers of phones and tvs don't realise they aren't buying a phone or tv, they are buying a device with many many functions .
The stereos of the 80s that had a hundred functions still had simple on off switches , basic functions were simple, and few people used the hundred functions. The buttons were just a selling point.
Now you need to go through hoops to use a phone or tv for the simplest function and if people are anything like my husband they love to add gadgets and extra layers of functions, making it even harder. It's nearly impossible to ignore the hundred buttons.
They just want to call someone up, to answer a call or watch their favourite tv show. And that's how I would teach it. Just the most basic uses they want, then when they are familiar with that then maybe add some more functions.
No painters in my family but my great aunt did this tapestry which now hangs on my study wall:
I've been there and I can't remember which city. Antwerp perhaps
Nah it's Melbourne.
My favourite painting in the house. It was a gift and I can’t really read the artist signature so I know nothing about it and that’s fine by me.
There is a fleet of hot air balloons with ads on them flying over my house. Can't even enjoy the morning sky without being sold stuff
I'd be less annoyed if they put any effort into the designs.
The Red Balloon one has their logo. It's on a GIANT RED BALLOON YOU DON'T NEED THE LOGO
They wouldn't even be that effective as advertisements. They're super high up and you can't control where they go. The most charitable explanation is they take the money to cover some of the time and running costs
The one I like is a patchwork of different materials, with very obvious seams on it. The logo is 'Craig's Balloon Repairs'.
My great-grandmother, Reta Sullivan, painted this in 1998. It's a shack on Brighton Beach (as she wrote on the back of it).
I got this when she passed away and we were deciding where her belongings should go. I also got one of her camphor wood chests, which is where I store my linen and towels now.
Posting in response to the proposed art thread that CEO and UMG were discussing below :)
Edit: spelled her name wrong, fuck me
Ooh nice!
That's a lovely painting!

This is a study of ‘Young Woman Braiding Her Hair’ by Renoir.
I ran out of time for her clothes and earring (plus the last few details) so you’re getting a tasteful unfinished nude.
This is excellent melba!!
Thanks. I’m not fully happy with it but as it is I got in with like 15 minutes to spare
I love your painting! 😍 I kinda prefer her nude like that, as a kind of subversion of the original.
What a beautiful picture! I like that it's unfinished, it leaves more to be suggested than explicitly stated. You're really talented!
Really nice.! Thanks for posting this its lovely ☺️
Wow, that’s amazing, and done in such a short time! Thanks for sharing!
So my dad's got Parkinson's and I thought I'd set up Assistive Access on his iPhone as he's currently struggling to use the basic functions on his phone, eg. Messaging, email, phone etc.... Man. It sucks absolute balls. Crashing randomly, scroll stuttering like it's 2010....worst implementation of accessibility I've seen. If he had an Android I could just set up a custom launcher to do all this with no issue.... daaaaaaaaaaaaaah
I found that many OS releases (not just iOS, but Windows as well, and Android to some extent) have been more buggy in the recent years.
I'm pleased to announce that TheStench™️ seems to have disappeared, or at least subsided enough as to just be non noticeable
My bathroom now just smells like shampoo with an undertone Glen 20 and body wash. Hallelujah!
It might be worth getting some of those moisture absorbing things you leave around the house just to make sure.
Or a cheaper alternative might be some baking powder and apparently coffee beans are good for absorbing smells too
They already put those in the roof. I don't think it's really worthwhile putting them anywhere else because only the bathroom and toilet have any kind of cut out in the roof for the extractor/exhaust fans, so the smell is largely prevented from escaping anywhere else
The majority of guitar content online is advertising.
Consumerism has left a wound in music making.
Edit: It's my last weekend before going back to work and I refuse to go to bed till 4am.
Those rabbit holes are also how you end up on waiting lists for things to be available in AU and/or scouring for ways to get them to you.
So I don't disagree with you.
Pre edits: the colour of that Gibson was stunning though yah?
Here's my issue:
I'm tired of being marketed to. At every Junction. No, I don't give 5 fucks that some new distortion pedal makes you sound like this person or that.
It's the infection of capitalism in art. There's nothing wrong with gathering the tools you need. But there's a point at which you are no longer a creator, but a consumer of gear.
I've fallen to it in the past. Massive pedalboard. Every fancy new pedal. And for me, in the end, it was a hindrance more than anything.
I'm so utterly tired of being constantly being sold something. Where "content creators" are ad men in a new skin for a new era.
The faux excitement. The bullshit spiel about how this piece of whatever is going to make me x, y or z. Its all a scam.
There is a section of musicians that are basically gear collectors. It's poison to the creative spirit. And I know how wanky that sounds.
Like I said. It's a wound. And like any wound, it spreads an infection. The idea that without this thing or that, you can't make the music you want to.
That you NEED this thing otherwise you're missing out.
Fuck. That.
/Rant.
Cheeky bugger!
Same with DIY. “You can repair this using just a screwdriver, file and hammer: here is how I did it with an industrial workshop of tools, sponsored by…”
Starting planting stuff out in the nu-bed.
So far marigolds, geraniums, poppies (flanders red), petunias, dietes, some sort of daisy. so good to not have to weed it (until next week probably heh). Personally I'd prefer more random placement (not in distinct rows), but I got my way with doing a bunch of different stuff instead of mass planting so we'll take it.
My MIL started painting this the day she retired
This doesn't look like much but it's sentimental. My FIL was also quite the artist and he was working on this when he died and never got to finish it. It was of a man with an umbrella and a small boy on a very windy day
Love it !❤️
not really artistic but something interesting I've had for a long time, a hand painted framed tile
it very much uses the same symbology as soviet posters and every single idea in this pic is a lie . I look at it every now and then and think about it. I wonder if the soviets believed it.
pretty sure 1985 was during the Soviet Afghan War
The photo is one I took, and the painting belonged to my mum. It’s one of my favourites
Moody. I like it.
Morning everyone.
I feel like a wrung out face washer
Why am I awake at 6am on a weekend. I would like to sleep more.
Youse were all good sports with "show me your drawers" yesterday. It goes to show the cutlery drawer can be organised but that other one with the kitchen gadgets is a lot harder due to the different shaped shit in there.
That's why I like this Joseph Joseph garlic crusher I bought. It's a kitchen gadget, but it's just a curved but of stainless steel. It doesn't take up much space and it can't break compared to other kitchen stuff you can buy
I like that.
I vote for the pantry if it's not too personal.
No artists in my family, but I grabbed this for my 35th birthday
Sorry for the bad photo.
Mine is worse, LOL (since I didn’t participate in yesterday cutlery drawers):
Not an artist I’m related to, but I saw a photo in a meeting and the photographer sent me a copy. They took this while trekking in Nepal. It’s been post-processed a few times over the years by the photographer. The other is a Matisse print: Empotés jusqu’aux constellations.
They’re currently mounted a little further indoors now.
That's beautiful!
That is sick! Love it.
When I saw it I was just like "this is gorgeous". The framing cost more than double the cost of the poster lol
I’ll post one more, this is the work of Emma Sheldrake, I’m not sure where she is based but I think we discovered her art at Manyung gallery many years ago.
Fun fact: posts from 2023 now show up as "2 years ago", because of upwards rounding, I guess.
We've all been here for 2 year numbers now! Rexxit happened almost 2 years ago!! Cri.key.
As requested. Set of anniversary cards

::Hook suspension is crazy but I find it so so intriguing!
Wow! 😮 and the tattoo looks like a Rorschach sample very cool.
Exactly what it is. It's a cover up for some teenage awefulness.
Your paintings are beautiful. Also, have you seen pics of the installation Stellarc did where he was suspended? He’s also done lots of other body-modification / science themed work
Thank you. I've not seen his stuff in person but am internet familiar with it.
I bought this when I was 17. It’s done by a Native American artist who I can’t remember the name of but I want to say she was Navajo?
I kind of regret framing it, because the texture was so nice…
Oh wow so cool, Ive never seen a framed one before.looks great!
Just been freaked out with some loud noises on or in the roof.
Hope it only on top. I’ve had enough of possums invading the roof in the past.
Something small I bought at the Vic markets about 20 years ago.
Edit: 2nd picture was part of a bunch of fantasy stuff that I purchased with my first pay check.
Just had a shower and headed outside and I'm dripping with sweat straight away. It's hottttt and humidddd yuck
Had a lovely day at the beach in Torquay today with some friends. Got a good dose of sun and pummelling waves, great dinner afterwards and watched the sunset before driving home. Content but I’m exhausted.
This is gonna sound odd but I don't care. Whenever I start a new book I like to match it to the seasons. For example, if the book is set in a hot climate then I'll read it in summer. Cold climate book then I'll read it in winter.
What about books that cover more than one season? Like, a book about somebody's year in a new town?
Good question. There's always those books that are anytime reads.
cries in war and peace
You get an immersive experience they way
Yeah exactly
And i ended up dreaming about music software. Back to bed lol
This painting was purchased at a community event about 25 years ago. The local painting group was raising money for something. The old lady who painted it was rapped my husband bought it.
I'm getting older I guess, and should be more active - pinching achey pain in my right shoulder. Yesterday, I got off the couch to show my partner something on my phone, was totally fine, when I went to go back to the couch, my shoulder was fucked. Didn't lift anything, not even myself with it, and now I'm stressed I've somehow torn my rotator cuff. Slept on it like an idiot (toss and turn in my sleep), and it's worse today, of course. Doesn't hurt when my arm is straight and I raise it to the side, but it canes when I bend my elbow so my forearm is down, and lift it so my upper arm is flush with my shoulder. So pulling up my undies and pants is very painful.
I'm prolly just overreacting. Been doing slow stretches as I thought it could be a pinched nerve. But I've freaked myself out with Dr Google I think 😅😅 if it doesn't go away I'll go to my GP - need to anyway for ✨mental health✨
Just a little venty-vent
If your shoulder hurts it ain't your rotator. That hurts in your upper arm.
Voice of experience
I remember that fairly recently I got up from my office chair to go to the bathroom. Took 4 steps and BAM! My back locked up lol
When I tore my rotator cuff I would wake up in the middle of the night, in pain, with my shoulder out again. I would have to sleep wearing a sling.
My advice is to see a physio and do the exercises they recommend to build up your shoulder muscles. It can’t dislocate when it is being held in place by muscle.
Thank you for this advice!!! This is really helpful and I appreciate it so much. 🙏🏼💜🙌🏼
Ok guys. Show me your artwork or something interesting that's on your wall.
This is on my garage door
Refresh and see above lol!!
That is epic!!!
Probably my favourite is this one. It's called "The in-laws" and I bought it from a local art show. Excuse the bad cropping but it was a funny angle to take a pic of without reflecting light. Aside from that I have about fifty paintings and drawings my kids have done, of course!
talking about tech stuff.
So I have a stereo I like to connect to with bluetooth so I can play videos and stuff on my PC through it.
After about 3 hours the stereo starts to stutter. Since the issue was only after a few hours of use I reckoned it was the device cache so would restart to clear the cache and that works. But I thought it must be something i'm doing wrong, I have the settings wrong, etc.
Nope, after much reading of instructions it's the cache.
I might not be expert but I try to be competent. 👍
Did something I've been putting off for a little while and climbed up on a chair to stick cable clip things onto the wall. Since I can't climb under the house, my current solution for whisking ethernet into my room is to run it along the "cornice" as TIL it's called, then using a flat type ethernet cable, running it underneath my bedroom door, then the "architrave" as TIL it's called. I'm not good at cable management, so it's going to be a bit messy
E: nahhh I need a siesta. I'm taking a nap
I love brunswick
Round springy they're all about the nang tanks. I think it's a rule that they get littered on the road too. Typing this on the dog walk and whaddya know :
Oh damn lol, like that Galaxy Gas brand being all like "iT's FoR bAkInG hUrR dUrR"
You sure they just didn't want a lot of cream with their mudcake?
Impressive collection lol
Hah. Reminds me. When I went down the shops the other day, cause the arseholes did that thing they do where they close half the shopping centre and force people to walk around the outside, I had to walk through a bit of a seedy area. Bunch of shopping trolleys full of rubbish and stuff, a few tipped over. Nangs everywhere. A few needles. A few shops and loading docks had what I'd guess were about 4-5 metre tall fences complete with razor wire over the top around their bins
Also chose a bad way to walk back to the bus stop and ended up having to go past a group of 7-8 dodgy looking people who were 100% sizing me up
E: removed a small rant about Brunswick. Probably a bit unpopular here
Love how nobody wants to sleep tonight and we're all still up chatting away! Glad we're all enjoying our first hours of the weekend :)
(Except the mods though. Smh my head. Look at them being responsible, reasonable, smart adults and sleeping at a reasonable hour. Almost 3am and my post still isn't pinned! Bloody responsible early bird people)
My excuse is that I'm badgering GPT for python code to fulfill a niche but simple purpose
I've also been doing a bit of research into the biology behind weight gain/loss, fat storage, ketones, nutritional requirements, etc. funky things, the body. Definitely needs a few big fixes though
I’m badgering GPT for python code to fulfill a niche but simple purpose
Curious. What's the purpose?
Also agreed that it is fun seeing a night time crew around. I miss the check ins!
Honestly it probably already exists, but I just want something that does exactly what I want and no more, and is easy to setup:
I've got a browser extension that extracts all URLs on a webpage and merged them all into a JSON file. I use them for archiving mass amounts of URLs onto the Wayback machine using another utility they have that archives all URLs from a google sheet.
Google sheets doesn't allow importing a JSON file, though. So the python script takes a bunch of little JSON files with a few hundred URLs, then converts that into a CSV file that I can just import into GSheets. It's like 60 lines of code, with a few extra bells and whistles added in for error handling. Very simple
Thunderstorm approaching.
EDIT: looks like no actual rain is falling.
Looks like it’s going to miss me.
We got some rain in Eltham and South Morang on our drive home from Doncaster so it might hit yet
Had a good night. Ate dinner with my sister and her friend, and then had a couple of drinks and a nice chat with a friend of a friend. The latter part was kind of scary because social anxiety, but this person wants to work with neurodivergent kids, so she might have understood any kerfuffles.
Ever since toll decided to stop calling themselves toll and start calling themselves the global express team or whatever it is, I've noticed they've gotten a lot worse. I'd never have rated them great, but they used to have pretty detailed tracking, including a live location of the delivery driver (though I think delayed a bit for safety), and we're good with communication. From memory they offered a 2 hour time slot on the deliveries I had as well
Now they just say that the label was created and the job booked, then the next update is just delivered. There is a map but it's pretty useless, because it's just a straight, as the crow flies map from the origin to the destination. Doesn't even snap to the road they'd take, and it doesn't even vaguely suggest a time, or number of stops before you. Useless
Toll was sold to Allegro Funds and rebranded as Team Global Express. Just capitalism at its finest: sell to the competition/buy the competition, rebrand so laypeople don't catch on, and enshittify. Works 60% of the time, everytime.
It worked for Fastway/Aramex
Ugh, can you imagine how much the rebrand cost.
Does anybody here have a costco membership? What do you buy from there? What are some of the stand outs? Tell me everything.
My aunt goes there for general shopping, but she does it twice a year and gets everything bulk. So stuff will last a good 6 months. Bulk TP, bulk essentials, bulk flour, dog food, etc.
I've never been but her next shop is in Feb iirc, and she wants to take me along and buy me bulk stuff as well, so my partner and I don't have to struggle as much financially. I'll let you know how it is :D
That's exactly what I'll be getting but I wanted to know what else I should be looking at while I'm there.
I don't have membership but went with my bestie who does. Before you go you need to know your unit pricing in the regular stuff you would but there in bulk, because sometimes is not cheaper than a Coles worth special. It's easy to spend a lot of money there on big stuff but not all of it is a bargain. And one visit was enough for me to work out I didn't need a membership.
Thank you for this.
I don't, but I've been with people. I doubt I'd get much value out of a subscription, personally. I don't think it's worthwhile unless you run a business, or have a very large family and the funds to buy gigantic bulk lots of food (and can use it before the use by)
$1.50 hotdogs are probs my standout tbh 😂 They also have cheaper fuel, and they're building a new servo in the west atm, but I keep an eye on petrol spy and it seems like it's routinely beaten on price, so while it's usually the cheapest in the immediate area, it won't be the cheapest if you drive 5-10km away or drive past a cheaper servo in your travels
They used to do a hot chocolate with marshmallows. That was good. Last time I had one was 7 years ago, so I dunno if they're still around and worth it
I know American Costco also allows you discounted medications and glasses/eyecare as well, I don't know if we have that here though
Also, sometimes they put coffins at the front entrance so it's the first thing you see when you walk in. I thought that was funky
Thank you for this.
My boss does. He buys cleaning related stuff for the business and gets the seafood (mostly salmon I think) for home.
I got it once to buy a white goods item that Costco had which was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than anywhere else. Membership was worth it just for that one purchase. I used it one other time for groceries that year, but I don’t have a large family so bulk goods are not that useful. My normal shopping method is to keep an eye out for colesworth specials and buy extras of the things I regularly use. So Costco wasn’t useful for me for regular grocery shops, but if I had a big purchase to make I would check Costco prices against JB/good guys etc. If I lived quite close to one I might consider it for the discounted petrol though.
If you've not seen this yet, well worth it. Might not be able to eat the bilghtwrs out of Country, but it would help. https://iview.abc.net.au/show/eat-the-invaders
Having a guitar is like having a weighted blanket. It makes me feel comforted for some reason.
Well put :)
Oh man. I’ve done some good stuff in the past but it’s too personal or identifiable to post, and now I’ve hit a really bad art block due to really struggling with life. :(

Ol' girl painted this years ago. One of my faves.
I really like that one
Oh that's just beautiful. I love the contrast of blue and orange, and the figures and their shadows. It's spectacular! 😍
Oh, she’s GOOD
Agree with everyone else that is excellent. I get strong feelings from it
Wow, that's really good! I absolutely love it - your family has so many talents!
It evokes so many questions.
That’s fantastic! Your mum has a lot of talent
I love this
I really love this, too.
Do you have any others in a similar style?
Sorry for the late reply. This is the only one she did like this. Was trying to get her to do more like it because a triptych sort of story thing would've been great.
