In order to call your mom, you have to:
Pick a color
Pick a number
Pick a number
Pick a number
No, not that number, Nora just did that and it's not funny to get the same one twice
Okay, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... Flips open page
You're a turd
Wanna try again?
I had a folding phone back in the day. I think they're called feature phones now. I preferred it over my Nokia because it was harder to accidentally call someone or make weird noises.
Can't wait to go full circle (literally) and have a fully flexible scroll phone 📜
You laugh, but there are some OLEDs out there that can do it. Not scaled down to phone size yet, though.
Oh I want to open a scroll like that dramatically
No sane person buys a foldy phone, unless they completely fix the issue of it breaking because it got folded.
There are two types of people
In my experience people who love folding phones have habit of taking care of their phones that no one is sitting on it on the couch, that keys are not in the same pocket as phone, etc etc
Then there are people like me who don't want to bother with taking care of a phone. And we hate folding phones. I like that sometimes my phone is on bed and I am sleeping I don't have to worry about what if i roll onto my phone in my sleep. I know my phone will live.
Anecdotal of course, but my flip phone has been great for mental ver a year, and my friend has had his for a couple, but ymmv
2 years on a foldable with no broken screens. It's been a few years from the cracked screens.
Glad we're finally moving away from the featureless black rectangle era, might even pick up a foldable once the price drops.
Right‽ Lmao, for years:
Everyone: The slab is so boring! Why can't they just innovate!
Four-dimensional hyperphone
Phone case manufacturers just now figuring out good design for "Traditional" foldy devices
Source? I have a folding phone and every case I've seen or used is super frustrating
Pretty soon we're going to be carrying cubes in our pockets
Or just use a normal phone that costs third as much. Or just use a pocket laptop if thats what you need because those can run linux and windows.
See
I have a foldy phone, I'm never going back.
if you want bigger screen just buy tablet....smh
I did, multiple times, sooo many times in all manner of price points, sizes, brands and even OSs (I've got fucking Windows tablets WITH cellular FFS just chilling in archive). Do you know what happened to them? They started collecting dust within a couple weeks
I don't want to carry multiple devices, even when I do want to I can never get the habit to stick, so I never have the tablet when I need it the most
My foldy phone solves that issue immediately, it's a phone when I need a phone and a tablet when I need a tablet.
Having a separate device for me, that I don't use all the time, is never going to stick, even if it is pocket sized. I always have my phone on me because I always use it, and now it can become a tablet when I need it too
Hmm maybe its just not something i would ever need. I guess i spoke for others without considering that.
Why have just one additional failure point when you can have two?
I like my phones like my katana: folded one bazillion times for superior durability
The only other available trifold is already like 3k lol I highly doubt it'll be more then that for a Samsung version
Cases are for sckrubs, you already have a clamshell that protects your device.
Not as protected as a DS, but good enough.
.
I don't know why people bother to buy foldable phones, if you want bigger screen just buy tablet....smh...
Tablet has bigger screen plus it's cheaper than buying foldable phones

I'm just curious
Does the screen vertical folding bulge area (idk if it has its own name) somehow get in the way during day-by-day usage?
Do you have one of those who fold along the longer side or the shorter one?
I tried a pixel 9 fold for a little while, it was neat but way overpriced for the novelty, and there are no cases worth a damn that aren't attached entirely by glue strips. Returned it and got a pixel 9 XL instead.
If they can make one with the same width/height as the XL (big hands, too many typos on the small screen keyboard), for under 1500, id probably go for it
Why have a phone with a screen? Just use your computer if you need it, smh 🤦
Why have a phone at all? Just ask a friend to use theirs if you need it 🤷♂️ or maybe write a fucking letter for once? Damn kids...
Bigger screen and fits in my pocket.
I guess you have to try one. I got a samsung fold 3, i loved it. Then, when my contract ended, i got a fold 6. I would have a hard time going back to a standard phone tbh.
My wife said she wouldnt get a folding phone but when i got my fold 6 i offered her my fold 3. She ended up really liking it and wants to get a newer fold when her contract ends.
So theres me, who knew i wanted one and am happy with it to the point where i cant go back. And my wife, who didnt want one but after trying one for a few weeks, said she got it now and would be upgrading to a newer fold when the time comes.
They need to get these in peoples hands if they want to sell them better.
Btw, getting a phone on contract is usually more expensive than getting the phone and the contract separately.
Esit: seems a more Europe thing.
If I want a bigger screen, I'm reaching for a laptop or desktop, not a phone with a self-destructing screen. I expect my gear to last at least 5 years, preferably 10.
I don't use a foldable phone... But you can't put a tablet into your pocket. It's meant to be the dimensions of a phone, just much thicker, so it fits into your pocket, while letting you fold it out to have double the screen size. For all the issues they have, that's a very reasonable and somewhat appealing feature.
tablet screen size is okay, but really the people who want bigger screens should be buying tvs. not to mention they have the advantage of being cheaper than tablets. but even tv screens can only get so big. a really cost effective way to get a big screen would just be to go to a movie theater. that’s like 10 dollars(?) for 2 hours of access to a huge screen.
I have similar question: Why did Samsung bother with developing foldable phones? It isn't selling as well as they thought, after all.
It did decently for a while, then better competitors came to the scene that didn't make the asinine decision to make it ridiculously skinny and ol Sammy refuses to change course on that so sales have been falling
Word.
Phone for, uh, phone stuff, while I'm out and about. Pixel 4a, $70 on eBay.
PC and TV screen for internet.
Crappy $25 tablet for reading epubs.
Lemmy: NO! I want all my use cases on ONE device that doesn't do any of them well!
OK, pay out the ass for it along with the associated global warming and ecosystem trashing. Oh, and the slave labor that took to produce it.
Lemmy: NO! Not like that!
Because electronics in general, including TV, PC and regular phones, aren't associated with slave labour lmao
Also, good job on combating climate change and ecosystem trashing by not buying one device, but four of them!
Imagine I want to read an epub or do some gaming, or watch a show while commuting. Do you suggest that I bring all my devices with me on the bus instead of just the foldable phone?
For those with Samsung folds (4,5,6) that want a solid phone case that has the ability to just barely stick on a magsafe sticker, look here. I'm in Taiwan but you guys can probably find it in America somewhere. It's a Korean brand.
I have dropped my phone from a moving motorcycle going 45mph and the phone was not damaged. I have used this brand case for 3 Fold generations.
The link goes to a Taiwan's ebay equivalent. No affiliate link. Just wanted to share my experience with a amazing case.
Edit: sorry link wasn't working.
Here is an image of it. I'll also try and find it on Amazon for the US folks.

Oops sorry, let me just get a screen shot of it.
New Samsung Origami phone. Each fold is a new dimension of value!
Fold your phone in to a paper plane to enter airplane mode. It won't stop you from receiving calls, but it will look badass when your $2000 Samsung phone makes it several feet down the cul-de-sac
Damn, I misunderstood. I thought the airplane fold was just to increase the aerodynamics when you need to throw your on-fucking-fire phone because Samsung somehow found a way to hold the distinction of designing the first phone banned on flights across the globe due to catching on fucking fire. Imagine how cool that burning airplane (phone/firework hybrid) looks though!
Continues to baffle me that Samsung did their damnedest to go out of business with making all sorts of shit catch on fire for a few years and everyone went "meh, it's shiny tho"
