Aotearoa Weekly Kōrero 3/1/2025

Last weeks thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

  • I've been away for Christmas, in New Plymouth and later to my in-laws. I didn't take my aeropress with me because I was trying to save space, and regretted it. I straight up stopped drinking coffee, happy to be home now, except my coffee is a bit old and lacks flavour. It was a bit disappointing, but still better than instant or the sachet ones.

I'm still on leave, so today I'm been trying to get a test version of Lemmy set up again in preparation for the upgrade to 0.19.8. Then I accidentally restored the lemmy backup over my personal production server - luckily it only overwrote things in common (basically the reverse proxy and backup scripts - which use the same file structure but have quite different setups). I then went to restore from my backup for that and realised it hasn't run since before Christmas, possibly related to when that PC motherboard died.

Luckily these things don't change that much so I have restored the appropriate files from the backup, but oh boy it's been quite the morning.

And on top of all this, I worked out Cloudflare has a 100MB file upload limit, so I decided to put one of my sites back on a direct port forwarded setup. Turns out my ISP moved everyone to CGNAT without telling us, which I worked out after too much time wondering why it wasn't working when I was sure I had it right. New router since last time I did this so I thought I was just doing it wrong until I thought to check the WAN IP. A quick search and I found others complaining about it, which they had not managed to convince the ISP to give them a public IP so not too much chance for me. Luckily I had already decided to move to a different ISP and had already started the process, but I did not check for this any it seems they are just all reselling the same Devoli connection 😢. Now I gotta see if I can talk my way out of a 12 month contract.

  • We got an air fryer over Xmas to replace our little benchtop oven and I have to say it was definitely worth it. Should have done it sooner!

Also our probably 20 year old dishwasher may have broke last night and we also need to replace our 15 year old mattress.. sigh.. why can't I get lots of money for doing nothing

    • We got an air fryer I think last Christmas (a year ago), and it does get it's fair share of use. Great for reheating things that a microwave does a poor job at. I think my biggest complaint is all the wind 😆. You put a slice of pizza in, and it better be a big heavy one or the wind will blow it upside down! Can't do mouse traps for the same reason!

Makes much better chips than the over, and great for pretty much any of the over meals like cordon bleu, toppers, chicken nuggets, etc. My mother in law uses it for sticky things as well like chops, ribs, etc, and it comes out great.

Dishwashers can be pretty resilient, if it's a good one then it might be worth getting someone to come and look at it. For a few hundred you may be able to get it repaired and get some more life out of it. At 20 years it might be on it's last legs but it really depends what the issue is. Personally I prefer a repair bill to having to choose a new dishwasher, take the old one out, install the new one, then dispose of the old one.

The matress you can probably just put up with a bit longer if you're already on too much of a spending spree 😛
