You sure can sleep with your armour on. And you can even gain a point of exhaustion when you wake up!
Eh Xanathar's Guide codified this and its FAR more forgiving than that. A long rest in armor simply means you don't LOSE a point of exhaustion.
I mean, I've fallen asleep with my reenactment armor on, but it's always been unplanned, not very useful for rest, and always regretted after. But if it's just chainmail and a gambeson, I don't really see why not.
Tunic, Arming jack, chainmail, gambeson? And finally a surcoat. Oof you can feel how hot that will be.

It sounds to me like people on duty and people sleeping should not have any overlap hahaha
